The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Has Tom been to the doctor lately with his back? Sounds like it's getting worse.

I'm 61, so no spring chicken, and have terminal breast cancer. I've had to give a lot of thought to the same issues as you ladies. Last year, I was hesitant to hatch out chicks for the same reason(s). Dh told me to do as I normally do, it would be fine. I didn't hatch out many, but did hatch out a few.

My oldest daughter and my grandkids are moving in with us this summer. It's a mixed blessing. I selfishly want to see all I can of them, with whatever time I have left. Daughter has learned a lot, and is pretty good at caring for my chickens. She really enjoys it, which is a major factor. Dh doesn't know nearly as much, but he likes my chickens, so he will feed and water them, keep their coops clean, and sprayed. He will also help hold them, or whatever he's asked to do. Daughter knows how to worm them, dust them, trim spurs, and keep their legs oiled to prevent scaly leg mites. I know my cat, and my chickens will be cared for. Unless big pharma allows the cure for cancer to be released, I know there is going to be a time when I will depend on my family to care for me, and keep things going.

Dh was complaining about being unsure whether he could keep up with a big garden. I told him not to worry, and he could always downsize. He doesn't have to plant the whole darned thing. My oldest grandson is 7, so he's getting to an age where he can help a bit with the weeding. He's closer to the ground, and his back is strong. Like I told Dh, in a few more years, he'll be very helpful.

Yes, remember, he consulted an orthopedic surgeon who said "sucks to be you" , in so many words. Said surgeries done for backs, like fusing, don't really work and insurance companies are not paying for them all the time anymore. So, he is stuck.

When is your birthday? We are the same age, Cheryl. I hope your family will help you as much as possible. Moving in with you is a huge step. At least someone knows what to do with the chickens. All my son wants to do is put them in a fryer. Idiot child.

Oh, great, now he has a 101* fever. What the heck would cause that to do with his back/hip pain? .....unless, his back pain is really a kidney stone. That could be. He has those on occasion. Had surgery in Atlanta to clean out one side and never did the other. Hmm. I hope not. Driving to Atlanta would send my stress level through the roof.

Is there Lymes disease in your area? Just a thought.

Was his doctor familiar with Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR)? It's fairly new here in the US, and not all spinal doctors know the procedure, so they push their own fusing agenda, but only if they think they can get big insurance money. Several months ago, my cousin had the fusion done. Her Xrays look like they put part of the hardware aisle at Home Depot in her back. Last month, she had to have it all redone. One of the screws popped out, so the rods didn't stay secured. She's still healing, and they don't want to start physical therapy yet, until they're sure she's healed enough. Very painful. On the other hand, my daughter was in a car accident, and just had the ADR surgery done. Tiny incision, and a week later she began physical therapy. Some discomfort, but no major pain. She's regained feeling in her left shoulder, arm, and hand. I don't know what the qualifications are, but it's a far better option.
