Mine have done that too, usually during the hottest part of the summer. I don't recall it happening in the cooler months, or in winter. It usually resolves itself within a few days. I notice too, that when it gets really hot, and they drink more water, their pooh can be a bit runny too. Again, that too resolves itself within a few days.

I too have seen a few wrinkled ends on some eggs in the last week. I've also been getting less eggs, so I'm wondering if some are starting to wind down for the season already. Last year I did see the start of molting as early as late July. Generally it start in August here, which actually isn't that far off either.

Every hen in the Old Ladies Group #2 is molting except Wendy. It's so darn hot, I hate it.


Oh, something actually got done today, miracle of miracles. Tom cut down three trees that needed it. Still need at least four more cut down in the front area and a couple in the old chicken pen.


It's in this sloping area that goes down to the original coop that I want to terrace to make it level, bring in truckloads of top soil to cover big tree roots and fill in the terrace area, then landscape fabric and mulch it, sort of like this photo I found online. It will stop where those two long logs that go across in front of the entire 20' length of that coop are and the steps go down at some point there to the lower level. But, we need to cut all the trees we can before that happens and try to estimate the materials it will take. I told Tom that if I have to stay here, it's not going to deteriorate into some shabby old shack, that I'm going to do something to make it easier to manage and more attractive, not so chaotic.

I want to put that run of privacy fencing at the beginning of the yard where the driveway stops so all our stuff is not fully visible to anyone who drives halfway up the driveway like they do at times and the terracing will start at the privacy fencing which will go from my sidewalk down to the perimeter fence. And that's also a problem. A lot of fencing is in need of repair after a dozen years of being up there.

No, those steps and the terracing are an example of what I want to do here. It needs something to fix that slope that torrential rains just sweep mud down the hill off of and make a mess around the old coop.

Omigosh, I am really frustrated about this crazy real estate market. Seriously, my house with the 3.6 acres and big steel barn, gardens, etc should be listed at $225K after seeing what new stuff is popping up here, like this latest one, built in 1940, really cute, but less than 900 sf and on less than 2 ac. It's in the town adjacent to mine, same county.

No way I need to buy something else smaller and older and less "together" for more money if I can't get over $200K for mine. Maybe I ought to just finish the in-law suite complete with kitchenette in the basement, make part of my wraparound deck a screen porch as the original owner intended to do, put in a lift for us old folks and stay put.

Though much of the reason I wanted to eventually sell it is because, frankly, I don't want either of my sons to have any say in what happens to this place, period. There are personal reasons other than they don't want to homestead and don't value it.
