The Exercise & Motivation Thread - 2024

I was feeling a bit lethargic today. My workout was less strenuous, and I read my Kindle instead of listening to music. I burned 7 fewer calories. :lau

It is always a good idea to scroll through the Random Ramblings Forum near midnight - you will find all sorts of useful threads that you would have otherwise missed :caf.

My goal this year is to pass the Coast Guard physical fitness test by the time I graduate college in the middle of October.

The requirements are as follows:
  • One minute of push-ups (men: 29, women: 15)
  • One minute of sit-ups (men: 38, women 32)
  • 1.5-mile timed run (men: 12:51, women: 15:26)
In addition I’m doing x number of flutterkicks, planks, and squats.

It may not look like much but for someone who doesn’t like to exercise and hasn’t done it in a while, it’s awfully difficult :)!

Today was arms and triceps again, with HIIT mixed in at the end. If it seems like I always do arms and triceps, it's because I am so terrible about finishing the program so I feel like I need to start over. I am absolutely determined to finish the whole 8 week program this time. Nothing will change if I stop again. 4 workouts a week for 8 weeks is very doable

Still doing the elliptical every day. I haven't missed a day yet! :)

Can someone tell me... if I were to start "power walking" (if that's the right term; walking with some handweights and moving your arms in rhythm), what would be a good starting weight to use? Is 2 pounds good, or just laughable? I have one 2 pounder, so I could buy a second. I have a pair of 5 pounders, but think that might be too much.

I run three times a week, but on the days I don't run I don't really do anything, so it averages out to not much 😂 My goal for the year is to run 366 miles, one mile for each day. So far I've gone just over fifty. I've got a 5K race this weekend, and I'm going to try to beat 31 minutes, which is my fastest time in a race.

I think five pounds would get heavy, quick! It's amazing how much they can weigh when you swing your arms. Two pounds is a great place to start, see how that feels
