The family friendliest breed?

I agree, after silkies, Cochin.
Jersey Giants are extremely docile, come in Black, Blue and White and don't go broody as readily as Buff Orpingtons. My Ameracaunas have been friendly and docile. I like Jaerhons too, small size, lots of eggs, quiet bird, very cold hardy.
You'd probably like wyandottes, welsummers or any of the rocks.
Though a favorite of most, I stay away from RIR because they usually dominate all other birds. Cochins wouldn't stand a chance with them.

What exactly are you wanting them for? If you are wanting just a pet and more of a more ornamental breed, I would vote cochin. They are very easy going and friendly. If you are looking for more of a production breed that is friendly, I would vote Rhode Island Reds or Barred Rocks. Both are excellent layers and friendly birds. I am partial to the Rhode Island Reds over the Barred Rocks, but thats just me.

I agree about the RIR dominating other breeds. They are more aggressive towards other birds in establishing their pecking order. But they are extremely friendly and out going towards people.

Not HUGE egg eaters, but we can gladly re-gift the eggs to all our friends & family that are!

Well in that case I think you would be happy with the cohins

EE's are still our favorite. I have bought them from several different hatcheries and they all do the best with us and the kids.
