The Farming Thread!

I am a prepper. I clean cow's teats before they get milked. I also help with milking the cows some too. I do some heifer chores (feeding and watering) and bottle feed newborn calves- a couple of my brothers feed them when they learn how to drink. We have primarily Jerseys. A wonderful breed of cow. We have one pure Ayrshire left in the herd. We also have some Ayrshire/Jersey mixes. We have one heifer who is a Swedish Red/Jersey mix.
Love all the info!
How many generations has your family run this farm?
How many head are there...milkers, heifers, calves?
I imagine the steers get sold for meat?

My dad worked on a large family dairy before I was born. A friend’s family had a big dairy when we were growing up. They had well over a hundred head of Holstein. Your pics and everything you have described brings back fond memories of my childhood. My wife told me she wanted “a cow” for milking not long after we got chickens. I explained some of the ins and outs of dairy life and she changed her mind rather quickly. It’s a rewarding life living on a farm but lots of hard work and early mornings that go along with it. I grew up on a much smaller farm with about 30 head of beef cattle and some chickens. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

You just gave me a whole new understanding of the word "prepper"

Hmm, how many generations? I'm the fifth generation. When my dad was a kid they milked goats. I think we are currently milking 39 cows, we have around 28 heifers (including the 4 calves in the barn, and 2 in the back pen). Yes, we sell bull calves for meat, or pets, whatever the buyer wants them for.

Here are some more pictures that I've taken.
