The Fart egg

I'd heard about them, seen pics of them, thought I'd never get one. I've now had the pleasure (or maybe displeasure) of finding three. What exactly causes them? Grandma says a whoops from the hen, dad says one bird is getting ready to molt. Then I also have a couple of pullets coming into laying age. So which is it?

I've only had it happen with my young pullets so far just when they started laying.

Same here....new layer......you may soon find a funny looking umbilical cord looking egg, with a tail, with no shell, feeling quite spongy, wondering "what the H$%^ is that?!?! New layer.......

My Grandmother always said it was the egg a hen laid when it was her last....however, I have since found that to be wrong because I have some laying ameraucaunas and I got one about a week ago and they all are still laying.
