The Fathers Day Hatch-A-Long!!! The Last Day To Set eggs Is June 3rd!!!!

I'm at three, #4 is zipping. Others are popping out too.

I'm always learning something new. I though if I bred my EE hens to my high production rooster (brown shells) I would get blue eggs. NOT! It's a green egg. A very pretty bright green egg. I need to figure out how to make more blue eggs.
Such an egg-citing time!

My understanding is that the brown and blue are different processes, that brown is a "covering" over the shell. The inside of brown eggs is white, and the inside of blue eggs is blue. The green egg should have a bluer inside, if you scrub the outside, the green comes off and its bluer underneath. If you want higher quantity of eggs, breed high production white egg layer with Ameraucana, and the result should be blue or light blue eggs. That's the theory, anyway. I'm trying to confirm it by personal experience. I have an Amer rooster, one Amer hen (the pretty blue egg), one Marans (hoping for olive), leghorns, several production brown layers, and some green and blue laying EEs - and 27 chicks from the bunch. The plan is to keep them til they lay to find out - but that will be Sept/Oct.

I love blue eggs!

I candled last night removed 21 then I added

9 bcm
7 mfd
2 from my silkie pen

That brings the total to 238

I'm adding 21 guniea eggs today for a total of 259

The one I pulled were across the board shipped eggs, not bad considering most of the eggs I have set have been shipped.

I have pulled 96/355 so like 1/4 mostly shipped eggs. I think that's pretty good. That's allot of eggs.

My friend has me beat he has 59 dozen not shipped eggs in his incubator. :p

Quote: If you cross the blue eggers with the typical brown ( not marans) egger, it is a green. More of a dark lime gree and the coatings do not rub off because the coloring is imbedded into the shell. Marans over blue eggers is a med olive green and , yes, the extra paint does rub off.

I have about the same mix of birds that you have, only more of them!

My best blue eggs are from my pure Ameraucanas of course and my Iowa Blue/Ameraucana crosses lay pretty blue eggs too because the Iowa Blues have a very pale cream color. Otherwise all my EEs lay some variant of green. I crossed an AM rooster on my Welsummer hens and now I have speckled green eggs

THe egg colors are as intriging as the feather coloring. So many different greens in the olive realm; and mint greens, a brighter green. So love the blues too.

I hatched some of the Iowa Blue/Ameraucana crosses in the Easter Hatch and got nine chicks. The majority were black, but got one Wheaten looking chick and one EE Orange looking chick. There are two of the black ones that are different; one is black and silver (looks like a roo) and the other one looks like it has black lacing...very pretty! Out of the nine, I think I have four roos.
