ok my chickens are about 8-9 weeks old now and I now know how many roosters I have.
I purchased 12 pullets, well so I thought but ended up with 3 roosters and 9 hens.
One of my roosters has established he is the king of the coop and chases the other two and pecks them. They are clearly scared and run away any time he is near.
Whats my options here ? I'm thinking if I get rid of the mean one a new pecking order would start and one of the other roo's would start right where the other left off ?
If I get rid of the 2 that's getting chased all the time will he treat the hens this way.

I've had chickens before but no roo's so would like some imput please.

Thank you

I know that 3:9 is too many roos but they're still all young and you don't know how they'll turn out in the long run. If it was me (and there's no blood being drawn) I would wait until they're a bit more mature before getting rid of 2 of them... ya never know who might turn out to be the nicest when they mature.

Well the one that is mean is the one my 4 year old picked out and she don't like the idea of eating him.. He is a molted houdan breed.
Might just get rid of the other 2.

We were struggling with a similar cockeral/pullet ratio (3:9) when nature took care of one of our roos. Our top cockeral, Reggie died defending his girls about 3 weeks ago. I would definitely wait unless you see blood.

In my experience, that dominant roo will be just as rough with the girls when he starts trying to mate with them. The more submissive ones will be more gentle with them. Also, roos that act that aggressively to other roos of the same age tend to be bossy and dominant in all aspects of life. Including to humans.

Just my experience.

Will it help if I pick up the mean roo and hold him for awhile everyday ?
He runs away when I get close so I would have to work to catch him.

It's easier to catch him at night :) but just the fact that he runs from you shows he smart enough t know your a person. Roos are suppose to go after other roos...it's their nature.
