The Flock Has Grown (Precious Babies)

I think one of your chicks was misidentified; I don't see any Barred Rocks.

Thank you for the heads up. I will be taking her back to Tractor Supply to double check because I asked specifically for a Barred Rock pullet, but I'm too new at this to know if they gave me the right one or not, and I just assumed they would know since they are selling them.

Unfortunately the employees selling the birds at local stores usually don’t know anything at all about the breeds, unless you are lucky enough to find one who raises birds and really knows a thing or two about them. Some of the employees are quite hilarious when they start telling you this and that about a certain bird. Now I’m no expert by any means but I do know enough to know they are full of it. But I just smile and go on.

Chances are you won’t be able to “return” the bird, however, since you just purchased four (and can prove it) they might just let you buy one more and not have to purchase the minimum again. The TSCs around here let customers do that.

Good luck with your babies.

I don’t think the last chick is Australorp.
I have 3 right now that are 7 weeks old now.
They didn’t look like that.
They were black on top with creamy white down on their belly and throat.

That chick is black and yellow.
I think it’s an Asian Black which is a hybrid TS sells.

Most of their employees know nothing about chickens.
I’m lucky because I live in a small rural town and many of the employees here have their own birds so they have some knowledge.

To the OP: Tractor Supply sources their chicks from Hoover Hatchery.
Google them and take a look at their breeds on their website.
Then you’ll actually know more than the employees lol

I think where the TSC is located determines where they get their chicks. I was told my local TSC chicks come from NM by a TSC employee so i assumed they meant privett which is where other feed stores in my area order from as well so it would make sense.:idunno

Could be.
But when you go on TSC website and look at chicks and click on a breed it takes you to Hoover Hatchery.
But that could be tied into location so idk...

Actually, that's just where they do their batch orders through if you order online. I was told that it actually has very little to do with TSC at all, except that it's set up through their website. My TSC (I'm in PA) usually sources their chicks from Ideal Poultry.

Okay.
I guess I was wrong.
It’s probably one of those things where you get a different story depending on who you ask.
Just like asking employees about breeds, etc.
Still...I like to know where my birds came from.
If I like them I might want more.
