The Foreigners Sebrights

I'm pretty sure you need some more sebrights :D

I'm trying to hatch as many as I can this season. I think I'm going to run out of grow out space.... you are welcome to come pick some up lol
Lol are you anywhere near the southeastern US?🤣

I had read that Sebrights can be flighty and aren't good for chicken beginners. But I read that after I knew what she was, lol. And they are my first chicks. But I'm finding her to be feisty, but very sweet and easy to handle. She's great with the rest of her flock and she is more than happy to have me handle her. She was by far the loudest when they were tiny, often making me run to the brooder to see what was wrong. (Nothing ever was. ) But she's more calm now, she only gets loud if her flock gets too far from her. She does not like that.

Unfortunately I'm almost in another world floating down here at the bottom of the earth lol

Flighty and loud is definitely the best way to describe them.

That's a long way to go for chicks. 😆

She makes this piercing shrill alarm sound when her flock gets too far. And by too far, I mean outside the run if she's still in it. She is not dominant (yet, but they're all only 7 weeks), but she wants to be near the rest of her flock at all times.

Yeah it sure is and it also means we have limited gene pools for breeds, which makes it tricky to get good birds

I never really thought about that, but it makes total sense. I'm lucky where I live, not only are there multiple stores that sell chicks (though mostly from the same hatchery), but there are so many people who breed privately. You can get everything from barnyard mixes to most pure breeds, if you look in the right places. I ordered 4 BBS Orpingtons from Meyer, 1 male and 3 females. Those will be here at the end of the month. Obviously, those 3 hens (provided everyone makes it) won't be enough for the one roo as he grows up. So I'm going to add more Orpingtons to my flock in the spring, but from a local breeder. That way I can diversify the genetics. At least, I hope that's what I'm doing lol. I'm still new at this.

You have the population to make it viable... we don't have large hatcheries that sell dozens of different breeds.... we don't have stores that stock chicks....

Most of it is done thru word of mouth and private sales.

It makes people like you so important. You're doing a great thing, helping build the population with healthy birds.
