The Free-range Frenzy Enter your chicken in this story

About a quarter of a mile off, somewhere deep in the bushes, Duchess' cry was heard by Fluffy who ran and hid beneath Coffee's tarnished feathers. Coffee sensed that something was wrong and stopped the slow procession of birds. She cocked her head sideways as did the others and listened intently. This time they all heard the piercing shriek that echoed through the path that they had just made. Without conference they hastened back down the leafy path, Coffee taking up the rear because she had to mind Fluffy and she was still a little stiff from the weeks of brooding. When they reached the clearing once more they had to search around for signs of life.
It was Duke who found Duchess, underneath the weight of the charred wood. She was blackened, slightly burned and missing a lot of feathers but she was alive. Although she was being pressed beneath her home, Duke could see that it was the wood that had ultimately saved her life. The fire's cruel flames had obviously taken a hold of poor Duchess but the falling beam had quenched the fire when it fell and miraculously shielded Duchess from the blazes that were all around. The forces of nature had also been kind, for the smoke had been blown away in the main into the surrounding area saving Duchess, at least from the suffocating fumes. Now all the small flock had to do was get Duchess out.

(Nice story writing :))duchess was barely conches but she did hear voices around her."help me please".she gasped .she felt the last word take all her energy out of her.she tried to look up but her eyes were blurry from smoke. She thought she saw Duke and tried to speak to him but no words came out.

(Thank you.

) Duke and Dumpling strutted up and down thinking hard. The wood looked a little too large to lift but there had to be some way... The piece of beam was prevented from completely crushing Duchess by the rest of the ruin which was fortunately supporting it, leaving a small, Duchess shaped gap in between.
Making a sudden snap decision, Duke returned once more to the now unconscious form and puffed out his chest. He carefully placed his head beneath the beam and walked forward until his shoulder was square with the wood. Dumpling realised what he was doing and appeared beside him. The pair pushed upwards as far as they could and they just managed to raise the wood off of Duchess' chest.
Unfortunately she was scarcely awake at this time and was in no position to move. The whole situation had overwhelmed her but she appeared unharmed and after an hour or so away from the building with some water and rest she should be fine.
Coffee scrambled up the wreckage and grasped Duchess in her beak. She pulled with all her might as Fluffy called to her from below and with one final heave released the sleeping hen from the carnage and dragged her to the cool safety of the bushes.
A feeling of happiness settled upon the quadrio as darkness fell but it was still tainted by the knowledge that their friends were not all safe...or alive.

Duke and the others simply nodded in an affirmative as Duchess sank her head and fell into a deep sleep. The others huddled around her protectively and Duke took the first turn to keep watch.

It was late afternoon when they all awoke. The sun was high in the sky and they all felt and looked much the better for the rest. Duchess especially had improved in hue and her breathing was less raspy. Cautiously and slowly the group began to process into the bushes, taking it in turns to holler for survivors. It was nearly dark when they heard a reply from high above in the treetops. A wild and edgy screech that was stemmed with relief.
