The Fricken Chicken story!

Pics
Yesterday I noticed Woman, very much not like herself. She hasn't laid me an egg in months. I thought she was egg bound. But sadly she was not egg bound. She had a very large mass in her lower abdomen. About the size of a baseball.. I made the decision to euthanize her last night, after a day of love. I didn't think my other chickens would of paid any attention to me burying her. But here is Ruby giving her a once over laying in her grave. I feel as if I just hosted a Fricken Chicken Funeral... Rest easy Woman. I'll miss you..

I’m sorry. I love the funeral for her, and her pretty grave. 🙁🌻

Yeah she was suffering. She has slowed down the last few weeks. The last 2 days she didn't leave the run. She was thin, and breathing was labored. So I hung out with her for the remainder of the day. My brother was going to take care of her for me, but I decided she would be calmer if it was just me. I'm glad she lived a good life here. Would of been 3 this late winter.
After witnessing the behavior of the flock, from the time I sat in the run, till I buried her. There was no doubt they was seeing their flock mate off. They never even budge when I pulled the trigger. I expected them to send off an alert that something happen. Like when a predator attacks. But yesterday they just watched. In all the sadness, I was in awe watching the flocks reactions. I feel bad. But I feel there was nothing I could do to help her.

I've told this story many times. So I'm just going to link to one of them. Here you can see how my Patsy helped Daisy, the greatest hen ever, along.

The flock knew Daisy was going to pass and was subdued for quite a while after she was gone. Here they were saying goodbye as I placed her in the ground.

I wonder if Woman had cancer of some sort. Considering she stopped laying, or had problems laying when she did lay.

She very easily could have. I would guess that the mass was cancer. I don't belief that most egg laying issues wind up with a mass. I know Daisy's salpingitis resulted in fluid retention and that its what resulted in her death.
This was a very large about baseball sized hard mass. It was lower towards where her breast plate was, not up towards her back. Felt kidney bean shaped, and didnt really move around much.. Her vent was messy. I should of did a necropsy, but had enough for the day. Her comb was a deep purple too. Ill miss my quirky bird. It was a hard decision for me, but I feel I did what was best for her.

I just love this group of gals! Let's just hope they are all girls anyway! :D but gezz I wish they would stay out of the woods.... I chase them back towards the house. Then 1hr later. Back out in the "coyote kill zone".. Are they trying to get snacked on? 🤦‍♀️View attachment 2324067View attachment 2324068View attachment 2324069View attachment 2324070View attachment 2324071View attachment 2324072View attachment 2324073View attachment 2324074View attachment 2324075View attachment 2324076
