The Friends of Latin Thread!

THOUSANDS of words come from Latin.

Again, I teach Spanish so showing students the roots of words and similarities between English and Spanish ~ Latin is what I get paid to do!

The majority of "low" "peasantish" type words come to English from German or Celtic languages

"Higher" vocab words tend to come from Latin

Ex. English word green --> German gruen

English word verdant --> Latin verdi

Ex. English word dog --> German dogge

English word canine --> Latin canis

Poultry also comes from pullus. Now in Spanish, chicken is "pollo." The genus name Gallus comes from a Latin word for comb and "gallo" and "gallina" mean Comb and Little Comb respectively in Spanish or ... rooster and hen
