I hatched out 9 barnevelders this past winter and struggled to tell which ones were girls and which were boys. 7 of them developed combs a little faster so I thought those were the boys and was kind of disappointed. Then a guy that had agreed to take my boys from me as (eventually) food lost all his laying hens to a predator attack so when he took the boys I threw in the two girls just because they were all raised together and I felt sorry for him losing all his chickens.

He called yesterday. They’ve grown and it turns out they were all girls. Every single one of them. that’s why I couldn’t tell them apart. Who’da thought I would hatch out 9 girls???!!!??? He is thrilled.

I know I'd be thrilled if my broody hatched 9 pullets!

It was 97 F here yesterday...headed there again today...we might get a thunderstorm later and then a cooling down tomorrow. The chickens don't seem to mind it. The hot weather just means more bugs for them. They are enjoying the Japanese beetle "snack station" I put in the chicken yard.......wish I could get them to hang-out around the grape vines and eat the JBs that are there. Stay safe everyone

I'd have been thriled if I'd kept them!!! I gave them away as cockerels!!!

We lost another hen yesterday. The Blue Maran that I hatched from DMRippy's eggs. The only friggin' one that hatched and she was so gorgeous. I think for confirmation she was probably my nicest chicken. I had even named her. sigh

RIP Ripley girl. hope it was quick.

we have ordered some more fencing. I am so friggin tired of this.

So sorry you have been losing your birds.

New fencing should help, but have you tried talk radio in the mean time? Get some battery-powered radios and set them to a talk radio station and put them out in the yard with the birds. Voices will usually keep the predators away for a while.

oh, thanks!!! I will try this until the fence gets here!

I have been talking to extension agents and wildlife people and they are all in agreement that fox are VERY CUNNING. So I am hoping that the fence works. (I am getting more of the 3" Premier electric net.) If this doesn't work , then I am calling a fox hunter. I have HAD it. I am ticked off (would use more serious language but the site won't let me)

My Legbars from BM6 and CPL are getting so big! I can't believe they're already about 3 months old! Should start getting eggs in late September/October! I can't wait! At first, I hated all colored eggs, then realized Legbar eggs aren't green or olive, they're blue. I just can't do olive eggs since it makes me think of a rotten egg. I know, it's all in my head.
