The Front Porch Swing

That actually sounds like an awesome name!
Thank you! I liked the idea of using something based in nature, but it sure did take awhile to come up with a name that didn't sound too gimmicky, haha!

Thank you very much!
I like that name!

Warning short rant ahead....
well, my realtor called Tuesday, we got an offer on the house. We needed to accept, decline or counter by Wednesday 5:00. We counter offered and wait. We're OK waiting to see if they accept or not, finally my realtor calls at 7:00 pm Thursday night and says they accepted our counter. Yeah! We wait, I email him at 11 am the next day, and wait. finally, I call him at 2:00 and ask about the documents, if he had received a copy of the signed counter offer or not. "Yeah, I got them. Do you want me to send you a copy?" Ah, YEAH!
Maybe I am out of line, but shouldn't I automatically get copies of all signed legal documents?
My realtor is a dork.

My fault, I should have done my research and checked up on him before signing. I just trusted my neighbor, she signed him to sell her house. I figured he may work harder to get people out to look at the house if he had two for sale in the same neighborhood.
I guess I'm a dork.
Congrats on the offer! Mom and I keep looking for decent real estate. We're not sure that we need to, but she has this idea that sometime soon, someone is going to complain about the flock and we'll be forced to be rid of them or to move. Obviously, she says, we'll be moving, haha!

Hope it all goes smoothly from now on, and congrats on the sale! YAY! Where are you moving to? (sorry, can't keep track of everyone here!
I think that's neat! Funny, I was thinking Big Tree Hollow for the name of our place here (we are a long ways apart don't worry), just funny about the coincidence! I like it!
I had originally thought about calling it The Hidden Nest (inspired by the hidden nests of eggs I occasionally find in the yard), but it just didn't roll off the tongue as much. Then I was thinking of The Hidden Nook or The Hiding Place and whilst looking for synonymous words, Mom saw the word "pigeonhole". She laughed for a solid five minutes because for whatever reason, pigeonhole is one of the weirdest words she's ever heard.
DH and I bought a old homestead back in WI. he is busy making more plans for remodeling the place.

I have a name for our place - if my DH wants to name it. Everyone in the neighborhood keeps telling us it is the best wild asparagus site in the area. I believe it too, there is a whole lot of it growing on the property. The 25 acres is mostly pasture and hayfield. So I think we should name the place "A-Spare-Grass Ranch".

Get it?

There are soo many things you could do with that "Welcome to The Tree Hollow" "See what you can find...." With your artistic skills you could make tree sculputures....

deb

That's what I was thinking, too! I want to make a logo for us that I can burn or paint onto some repurposed wood. My sister has told me that she can get me pallets for free if I want them. I imagine that I can cut them down to size, screw/glue them together and paint on the logo. I have lots of ideas, I just need to put pen to paper and figure out what I'm going to do.
Now if only I can figure how to make a tree sculpture. I'd likely need a well-cured log. Oooh, I have the limbs of a fallen tree! More ideas!!!

Here's a little more of what's going on right now.

I think the biggest threat to the flock is Dad. I kept the hens locked up in the coop for a couple weeks because we were preparing the backyard for a party and Dad loved it. The roosters didn't get on the patio and the rest of the birds didn't seem interested in bothering anyone. The hens are pretty adventurous and they tend to instigate property damage, so Dad really liked that they were locked away. However, some critter got into my coop and killed my quail (I was told it was probably a gopher. It ran off with the heads and ate part of the chest, carrying the birds out of the coop one at a time) and I felt it prudent to let the hens out in case something came back. None of them got hurt, though, so I'm thinking that this thing only took the quail because they were small enough to not be an issue.

Anyway, I let out the hens and they were out for only two days. Dad flipped out. The patio was suddenly covered in poop and he was not a happy camper. I decided to just lock them up again today because the risk of a gopher eating my chickens is significantly smaller than a chicken dying because Dad threw a stick at it. Oh yeah, Dad throws sticks at them. Nearly killed a rooster once just because he was on the patio.

With all the birds in the coop right now, I've calculated that if all 39 birds are in there, they have about 7 square feet each. If only the hens are in there, they have 14 square feet each. Of course, these are all approximations. I need to take proper measurements. Either way, I'm at least happy that they aren't cramped. That's only taking ground space into consideration. If I can add in a couple more roosts and some ramps to higher areas, I have a feeling we can nearly double the habitable space.

Speaking of which, I realized how many chickens I have! 27 total, 21 hens and 6 roosters (3 frizzle cochins that aren't violent, one Dutch Bantam rooster, an EE rooster, and one Black Australorp rooster who rules the flock). It works, considering only two of the roosters actually actively control the flock. I also have those 3 guineas (that I'm desperately trying to get rid of because I just can't stand their weird little Joker faces) and 9 ducks (two drakes and 7 hens). That's not including chicks, though! I have four chicks outside (one definite female EE mix, one definite Buff Orpington rooster, and two mystery-probably-male Naked Neck and Blue Cochin chicks) and ten chicks inside (8 Australorps, 1 EE Mix, 1 Silkie Serama). Hopefully most of them turn out to be females. I've already had save the date for the 8th week, just in case I end up with loads of males. If I can't sell them, I'll likely have to process them. Oh well, let's just get them to that point. Then I can complain about having to process a bunch of roosters, haha!

...I just kept going and going. Sorry about that, haha!

Your predator was probably a cat. Gophers don't eat meat.

We processed Speckles yesterday, so the last of the roos at Oleo Acres is gone. It was so quiet this morning I actually slept in until 5:30! Peace should reign supreme now, as soon as the girls re-sort their pecking order.

I like the name, IB..... I don't know why the word "Hollow" always brings up visions of a peaceful, dark green place with secrets around every tree. I can't remember if you have a run attached to your coop or not, but if not that might be the solution so your Dad doesn't get too upset with unwanted deposits from the chickens but they still get time outside.

Wyo, here's hoping that the rest of the sale and the move to Wisconsin goes well. I know you're anxious to get settled and turning your homestead into your home.

I've got Katie for the next week. Kids are leaving for Denver today for Kendra's follow up MRI and EEG. So we decided to kill several birds with one stone. Every year we take Katie back to South Dakota so she can play with her other cousins and see her other gramma. Gail has MS so traveling out here has become impossible for her. I'll get to see Linda and see how she's doing and I sure want to check up on Little Diane. So we're taking off Tuesday and should be back on Sunday. Linda and Little Diane are both healing up well - Linda from her surgery and Little Diane from the assault - but I want to see them for myself.

Long time no see, everyone! Life caught up with me again, so I abandoned the forum for a bit. It looks like that'll probably keep happening, to be honest.

Lots of cool stuff has happened in my absence. For one, I hatched a bunch of chicks! Only three have died so far and that was due to weakness (one Australorp and one Silkie) or freak accidents (one Australorp met his doom in the chick waterer).

Almost all of the eggs were from my Australorps and both the parents are black, but one of the chicks is grey! Hopefully that coloring sticks around because I want to utilize it in the future! I did hatch one Silkie Serama, though, and he/she is doing just fine! She holds her own against the bigger chicks and is quite found of sleeping in top of everyone in the pile, haha!

Mom and I have been trying to get this business going. We are trying to build up a good amount of merchandise. So far, the dress thing hasn't been working, but we have plenty of small furniture that we are fixing up. I just need to finish a couple projects and then I can start building a Facebook page with plenty of pictures.

Anyone have any ideas for a name for our little business? It's going to be run by us girls and we are doing it all ourselves. I've tried to come up with something but I'm not very good at it. It needs to be a name that is neutral so it can encompass any and all things we sell (from artwork to furniture to dresses).

Anyway, I'll check in later. I have some painting to do! We bought nine old windows with wooden frames and I'm painting one for a friend who got robbed. She can keep it or sell it, whatever she feels comfortable with. Hopefully, if she does sell it, she can make her money back.

I always wanted to go to a store called "A little of this, a little of that." Just saying...good luck!

I think being on the forum knocked some cobwebs loose! I just came up with a name!

How does The Tree Hollow sound? I remember going up to these big old oaks when I was a child and looking into the tiny hidey holes in the trees, trying to see in the shadowy depths. Animals would hide inside and I could never see them, but the mystery kept me coming back.

I imagine that sort of mystery would keep me going into a store. I like to visit places where I'm not sure what I'll find. The sensation of discovery is what really intrigues me.

That sounds perfect.

There might have been a translational mishap that has led me to believe it was a "gopher". My uncle told us that's what it was but there are tons of words in Spanish that don't really have an English translations. Gopher was probably the closest thing to what he was actually saying.

It wasn't a cat, though. There is a tiny space that an animal can get into the coop through, but you can't fit a young cat's head through it. It's way too small. Some sort of rodent had to have gotten in there. I had originally thought it was a possum, but most possums wouldn't have gouged out the chest or dragged the bodies around.

I'm sure I'll figure something out! I want to set up big rat traps along the top of the coop just to see if I can kill some of the things that could be getting in there.

No, he's the dork. By law, you are supposed to get a copy of the papers. He just got busy and forgot. Tried to bluff it out. But look at it this way, he worked hard enough to get an offer confirmed. That's a win-win for me. Cut him a break. I did the real estate thing for a couple of years. Business was so bad that I had 12 confirmed deals fall through in a row. (Couple backed out, cracked slab, internal wall damage that owners wouldn't fix, etc. ) It was NOT worth the hassle to me. I made no money unless there was a closing. Of course, that was back in the '80's when interest rates were 18%. Never missed it.
