The Front Porch Swing

Those sound like they'll be great layers, they'll handle the heat well too. I really love my leghorns. They can get friendly if you handle them a little every day. That's what I did with mine, and my avatar picture shows one of my white leghorns playing in the sandbox with my son. She flies over her pen fence whenever she sees him, even when he gets off the school bus, and runs over to get the crust from his sandwich.
Sounds like yours might carry the blue egg gene too? That would be a great breeding project.

Yes, they are called SBEL's super blue egg layers. Not always assured of blue though, could be some white ones. DMRippy, the person I bought them from, said that you can breed the roos because they carry the blue gene. I have the new ones in the uninsulated storeroom and even though it has A/C it was high 90's. Only 84 outside. So I ran and got another fan and a lot of ice. I buy the tiny 8 oz bottles of water and one fits in the waterer perfect and one 16oz coke bottle on it's side so they can stand around it. They are chirping like crazy. I have one 3 wk pullet corornation sussex that I put in there with them to teach them to eat the fermented food. They fooled me. They taught her to not eat it. Just crumbles. urgggg.

This putting chickens to bed is getting tiresome. It's almost midnight, but since we don't get full dark, half of the flock stays out in the run and falls asleep on the roosts there. Only on cloudy nights do they go in by themselves. I had to lift 5 chickens in again. And if I accidentally grab their feet while doing it, they go berserk. Our roo has gained weight nicely though. There might actually be something to eat on him if we need to process him. So far he's been a gentleman towards us though, but he has once charged the neighbor.

I think I would just train them to go in for treats. Go out every day at "bed time" and call them or rattle a can of scratch. Throw the scratch on the floor inside the coop and once they are all in, shut the door.
Might be worth a try. But mainly I think it's all the light messing with them. They do know how to go to bed, on cloudy nights when it gets dark enough, they go to bed by themselves.

Maybe, after they are closed in for the night, you could close shades on the windows so it would be darker inside. I dunno', just a thought, I get those all the time.........sometimes they are good ones.............
They sleep alright once they're in the coop. And one of the benefits of fall this light is that I have a black copper marans who judging by her behavior will start laying any time now, she'll be 18 weeks tomorrow, so really early for that kind of breed.

Those sound really neat. One of my "projects" is EE hens with a Brown Leghorn roo. About half of them get the pea comb, which is good for my cold winters. The females are very easy to tell because they get the salmon breast feathers. Males get the black. She was hatched in late March. I call her Blackbeard, but that's not a great name for a girl :)

I have always wanted to try the fermented feed. I don't know how my birds would feel about it though. My family wasn't crazy about the homemade dilly-beans I made last summer.

Hi everybody, how is your day going? Mine is ok. The weather is holding cooler this week due to the rain. And we have had some rain. Some more expected tomorrow I think. My new babies are doing alright but are totally terrified of me. They huddle in the brooder the whole time I'm in there. Part leghorn and part Crested legbar so I guess scaredy cats. And so tiny even at 4 days.

Just got back from loaning out our pickup bed for mulch to my son's friend. Open house this weekend. Woo it's hot out there. Nice change.

Aww, congrats on new babies. I kept sticking my arm over the brooder box and one day they umped on it. Best friends ever since. I love my leghorns.

Our Sussexes were like that too, but after we put them in with the older guys, they've become a bit more skittish
