The Front Porch Swing

yep thats the ligament they used from the front of the same leg. They sent me home with one of those machines that bends your leg up and down all night long. It hurt but felt good all at the same time.

A Good friend of mine married a Rodeo Cowboy... Rough stock rider specifically Saddle broncs. He also was a house painter in the off season... One day he was coming down from a ladder and his knee gave out. It was always doing that on him and he had compensated for many years. WELL this was on the Job so they sent him to the Emergency because his leg was just hanging.

When they opened his knee up it kind of fell apart. about the only thing that was holding it together was extreme muscle overcompensation. Who knows how long he had lived that way with it. And they were able to fix him up... He was back painting houses and riding saddle broncs.

Funny thing is you think of Rodeo Cowboys being rough with horses... He was an excellent kind rider and very good with young horses training the stupid out of them...

That extreme Metallic sheen of the Akhal Teke is characteristic of the breed. I have seen these in person when they first appeared in the US. And there are breeds all over Europe and Asia that Most have never seen in the US. Plus uses that are un heard of here like the Dancing horses of India the Marwari.... Look them up on YouTube.

There are also coat patterns most people have never seen like the Brindle coat. Its can be a form of Chimera. VERY interesting how that happens. Twins re combine to make one animal... therefore there will be two sets of DNA.

here is a page discussing the different colors that people dont usually see.

Deb, my folks raised Appaloosas for a while. Beautiful horses. I didn't have anything to do with animals in my teens (or later for that matter)

I have several fellow Dutchies that moved to the US for the cheap land, some bring their horses across the pond. An expensive endeavour, but to some folks they're family.

One has a Fjord, those are beautiful. Love the hair.

I love Fijords... Love the doos too. I had an online friend that sold me her forecart. She was getting out of Draft horses in order to devote all her time with Fijords. She had teams she would drive in Combined Driving competitions and she rode them as well. people with trail horses would ask her if they could keep up.... Bwhahahahah...

I am sharing that link with my horse group.... Have you ever seen a fijord with a full mane?

These horses are pony sized but not small. Appx 14 hands. lots of people use them as a team for light draft work... Mowing Harrowing planting seed Feeding livestock from a wagon....

Reminds me of an Icelandic horse. Those enjoy a pretty good reputation here. Small horses that can carry even heavy riders, and they have their signature tölt gait which makes them really comfortable to ride. Are there any of them in the States?

I'm not much of a rider, and it's been years since I've been on one, but it was a lot more comfortable than regular horses. I really would need to get myself up in the saddle again, I've been talking about it for years.

There are a breeder or two in the US. I saw a demonstration of them in PA. Their tolt is very impressive!

Quite a few breeders here of Icelandics. Great all round horses. You have to have a special saddle to handle their HUGE shoulder movement. Matter of fact their treeless design swept the saddle making world with a bunch of innovative ideas.

There is a formula for the weight carrying capacity of a horse having to do with the diameter and length of the cannon bone.... bone between the knee and the ankle. For horses... ponies on the other hand pond for pound have a larger capacity for carrying weight. I dont know what that formula is. Though Icelandics are pony sized in many cases they are considered a horse due to their proportions.

Here is an Icelandic in full Tolt.

Of course this is in the show ring. but this is an adult man riding. The Tolt is similar to me as a Rack in five gaited horses. and very smooth. A Tolt/Rack is a four beat hoof pattern. (For what its worth a walk is a four beat hoof pattern as well.) But its much much smoother than a Rack.
