The Front Porch Swing

Silver laced barnevelders hu? Never heard of 'em . But I looked them up as you suggested and oh my! I just love the regular red ones. I've seen pictures of a few blue ones but the silver is breathtaking! Good luck on those!

I've seen guys at poultry shows wearing a mask. I didn't talk to them and I assumed (erroneously, most likely) that they were there because someone bugged them into going and they were paranoid about being around the birds! I guess now there's another side to the story that I had no idea about. Isn't there something you can do to improve the quality of your "sniffer" so you don't have to stick your nose in there and inhale so deeply?

He is Lab/Blue Merle Border Collie. He likes to play with strays, though, so I back him up with the rifle. We have a coyote pack that circles our clearing here and Jake stands them off...sometimes I will go out and howl at them with him and we have a regular sing song....shuts them 'yotes right up. Let's 'em know he has a back up pack member. I love to hear the 'yotes singing. We also have a few resident black bears and grey foxes.

I got him as a 2 mo. old pup and trained him then on all the commands he knows now...took a couple of evenings in the house to do that, with food as the motivator. He's mondo brilliant and I could probably train him for about anything if I would put in the time. Took about 20 min. to train him on chickens at 5 mo. of age and he hasn't broke training since~he killed his first coon at that age. He's a keeper.
At what age did you leave him outside? I really have no patience for a young pup that cries and cries because it misses its family. I don't blame them, I just don't have the patience for it and I'm not letting a dog sleep in my bed.

There is a family here in town that has golden lab/border collie crosses free. They're really nice looking dogs and I'd love to go get one of them, I just don't know if I'm ready for a pup and I definitely don't want a dog that will play with strays... or worse, help them terrorize my birds!

These are they. I like the one on the right, in the back with lots of white. Or I like the dark one on the far left.

I left him outside all the time...from the very get go. He got to come into the house for visits and training but he lived outside with our other dog, a Lab/GP mix old female. She was not a bit pleased to have a pup wooling her around and was jealous of him at first but after the first correction, she was no longer aggressive towards him about that. She was on a wireless electric system but he was too small for that, so I just trusted he would stay with her all the time and he did. When he got 5 mo. old and was big enough to wear the collar for the system, he got his own collar and trained to it the first 5 minutes of wearing it...he actually trained on it quicker and better than the older dog. He has never known any other method of confinement.

Maybe you should get two of them? Get one that's a little more assertive and one that isn't so they can work as a team?

VERY cute pups! I like the one on the extreme right in the picture and the little one you like that's sitting. One heavy boned, one light, one assertive enough to have his face in the food, one holding back and waiting his turn.

Yeah, I was kind of looking at that one on the right too, for the same reasons. Thinking about behavior and timidity, I might not want the one sitting back. I would want a bolder dog and if I wanted another for back up, I'd probably take that other one I liked. I don't know if I could do 4 dogs though. We already have 2 house dogs (Ugh!) My daughter says she's taking the shepherd with her when she gets married (whenever that is) and she's welcome to him. He's a nice dog and all but he drives me crazy.

Here's one that is in a shelter not to terribly far away and I have sent an inquiry on him. He's a lab/border collie cross too.

I really like the look of this dog. He looks intelligent and bold enough and he's got some nice thick legs. Still young but not a blue eyed baby that cries a lot. Nice thick fur too so I wouldn't worry about him out there on our very chilly wintry nights! Of course I'd provide a house for him to sleep in and get out of the wind and sun but I'm hoping he would make a good chicken guard.

The dog in my "avatar" is a poodle golden retriever mix and wants to please us. She has turned into a wonderful dog around chickens, I would not have thought that possible with both of her ancestor breeds being bird hunters. We did an internet search on "smart dog breeds" and then found her on a rescue site.

Snow on my porch swing this morning so I came to your porch, you all keep it warm and friendly.

Hi! Is there room for one more on your porch? Winter is getting long and feeling cold (-30F last night) here in Saskatchewan, Canada. The thought of sitting outside on a porch with friends and seeing flowers, hearing birds and watching chickens outside sounds wonderful. I started reading this thread from the beginning, but skipped ahead now to say hi. Thanks for starting this thread. I'm planning on going back and catching up on what I've missed.
I'm amazed at how hardy my chickens are. They are in an insulated, unheated little "barn". It's usually 10 or 15 degrees warmer than outside. On days it gets as high as 10F, I open their outside door and they push each other to get outside first. I put straw on the snow and they love scratching through it. We've had a long 3 week stretch when they've had to stay inside and I'm hoping it will warm up soon. Once it warms up here, you're all welcome to come sit on our verandah and enjoy our long days in the summer

hello all. I'm coming back. been sick. having a bout of lung infection.
we all know them guys who had chickens since 1902. you know the ones . when you talk to them. they hack and cough and you swear the going to die in front of ya. well it is now official I'm one of them old guys. i got the old time chicken man cough. the only thing I'm missing is the part when the old guy says, yep had a bout of TB back in 42
so the hospital gave me this inhaler and some meds to take home. then i got to see the doc for more crap to take. i will say this i put and end to it when the respiratory people said you must wear a mask around your chickens. i said no i will not. i told them i will die in my coop before i wear a mask. them things are just to darn hot on my face.
before you all ask i have brooder pneumonia. it is an infection of the air sacs in the lungs.
Welcome back Bruce! I am sorry you have been under the weather lately. You have certainly been having a time of it! You are in my prayers!

I didn't see a price on these. Not that i need a thousand. But......
Here is an idea.....if we could find several people who wanted these, we could have one person order and then ship them to those who participated.

Lisa :)

Morning Lisa! You're up and at em early this gorgeous morning!! Not looking forward to the weather change. Getting ready for church so I'm gonna drink my coffee and run!

More ICE seasoned with an inch or two of snow coming. I hear sleet or something hitting the windows now. We are wusses around here! Booo hoo.. :( Oh dear spring where art thou!?!?! Oh shoot, forgot to salt the porch! I was thinking and HOPING this stuff was over. When it comes to winter weather, I have a whole new respect for northerners. lol
