The Front Porch Swing

Oh dear. This is sad news.

But it sounds like the right call. Your one remaining hen will be lonely. Is anyone in your area selling pullets? Or will you hold off on getting more birds until after the dog situation is resolved?
We have a small family-owned feed store nearby. They have chicks. I have a severe hearing loss but have a cochlear implant. When I sat down with her, I heard something funny. I don't know how long she has had a rattle. I feel like a fool!

DH is starting a new job in a month. We just sold our house, and now we are supposed togo on a house hunting trip next week... We've been checking MLS.ca (we will be on Vancouver Island), and found this this morning: http://beta.realtor.ca/propertyDetails.aspx?PropertyId=13627409

It looks amazing!!!!
I hope this pans out for you! Good luck!

Update: I am down to one hen, Lena. DH is going to put Droopy down when he gets home. She wasn't eating today, just sitting. I picked her up (which is unusual) and had her on my lap. Her head was under my jacket for a bit. I noticed little flecks of blood on my coat. I put her down and then I noticed my shirt was red. When I checked her over she looked fine...no feathers missing or anything.

Lisa

Well...that's a shame.

I'm sure sorry about that, Lisa girl.

I think your idea about chicks would be a great thing now and will give Lena something to fuss around and talk to while they are in the brooder and then she can show them how to forage and such when they get out.

Of course, you don't want to jump back into chickens while the dog threat is still out there, so maybe when Ken has that one solved he won't mind you getting some chicks at all. Spring, new chicks, a new start, a different story. Sounds good.

WOW. That's all I can say!!! No...I can say more...it's gorgeous!!!!! What a charming and beautiful home! A person could get lost right there and never want to come out...ever again.

You shouldn't. You've been in shock and dealing with the enormity of it all and it's very easy to miss something like that. I'm just glad you are going to help her out of her misery..some wouldn't, out of feelings of guilt and would nurse her until she suffered longer and finally died. Bless you for caring enough to let her go.

I agree. The animals are so very good at hiding their troubles.

Quote: Isn't it? It's amazing - and compltely in our price range so we could afford some probably necessary upgrades (windows - it gets cold in winter), and maybe another wood stove...

Maybe a solar set-up for off-grid?

Anyway... as someone else suggested, ducks might be another option to consider! I'll have to figure out how to make an income off that property!

And walking to the beach for clams, mussels, and oysters?

Thank you Lisa, and I am truly sorry about your chickens... My step son is severely deaf, so I can see how it is something that you could miss quite easily. You've had enough to deal with lately so don't beat yourself up!

And... did you see the outbuilding - could easily turn that into a nice big coop, eh? (yes I'm Canadian!)

I saw that! And I loved the composting toilets....you'll have to study up on those if you haven't already. I love the big, open floor plans, the wood they used both in and out, the number and size of the windows...everything. What a dream!

I know just how you can make some money....build a rustic, small cabin(one large room)~or turn the barn into one~ next to that lake and rent it out for quiet, secluded fishing vacations(outside hot tubs are nice) and supply it with home grown eggs, ham(you could have a few pigs!) and homemade bread. You could have geese there and pluck the down to make down throws, pillows and comforters for sale. You could build a landing or dock and have canoes for the renters.

Yay! It only took about 5 emails and some whining, but I actually got a feed company to give me their bulk price list! Yay!

And

because they wanted to know all my business info, including farm license # and how many years we've been in business before they wanted to give me prices on their products. The whining got me around that, but probably didn't set me up well to meet or beat their strict screening criteria. They don't sell to just anyone.

FWIW ... we've been farming here since 1910.
