I so love seeing other people's setups because it gives us a chance to understand what you are talking about when you discuss your flock, the changes you make and why. I love the topper for that run and how the sides roll up...I'm getting me a white tarp for my coop this spring so I can get that natural lighting too. They have a lot of great space and airflow in there....lucky birds!

I simply love that you thought of leaving that piece in the top of that trough for a handle....I love those kind of solutions. Cheap, easy and built in functionality.

I am tickled that you convinced TPTB about FF and they are moving in that direction...you are one persistent and smart lady with all that you have stacked against you on that farm.

Awwww, thanks, BK! I was hoping you'd like the feeders. Not as simple to construct (or as inexpensive) as a section of rain gutter, but TPTB didn't want those for some reason, so ...

Those two cats crack me up! They are so different, so similar, and so much fun. They really get along well. And one of them even likes me a bit. Kita was just starting her "I Love You!" yawn face routine.

About the coop ... I really like the solution of greenhouse plastic over the top of the coop ... we have shade cloth under it, so that helps it not get TOO hot in the summer, but we end up leaving the sides up almost all the time, rain or shine, except in the center 1/3 of the coop, which is where we have the roosts. This "bottom" room in the photos is the one that opens to the run, so the end door is open all day, too. We only close the coop up during really active bad weather ... except the dorm room where the sides are down at night so the birds can sleep without too much breeze on their bums. The roosts are at the height where the sides and roof of the coop meet, which is about 3.5 feet.

I know ... I can't believe I'm getting TPTB to move toward FF, etc. But sometimes if I give TPTB enough puzzle pieces they can start putting things together and pretend it's THEIR idea. They believe FF will cut back on waste, for one thing.

My week has been ok I have when to church, played with chickens, fell off a cliff busted my butt and got my knee pretty bad, I have done schooling, ordered 12 or so chicks from Ideal Poultry, put posters up trying to sell my horse!

Prayers are wanted! I hope Lucy (My Horse) gets a nice home with lots of kind and loving family to enjoy.

P.S. Who made this cake it is delicious!

Fell off a cliff? Because of the horse? Try Craigslist too. Yep, I stopped with horses several years back. I have a very strong aversion to pain!

Prayers for your poor aching body or prayers that your horse will find somebody who likes falling off cliffs? or both?

What a nice coop area for your chickens! How do you find the PVC feeder working for you? Do they jump up on it and scratch the feed out, or isn't that a problem? It seems like a really good idea. They're a happy busy looking flock of chickens!

Tell me about Lucy..... My dad has horses and has been looking for a couple more. He does trail rides, and isn't too far from you....

I think the PVC feeders are going to be okay. They can kick litter INTO them, but they don't seem to enjoy trying to stand ON them to scratch the food out ... the PVC is slippery and the radius is not right for the size for their feet and the edges are a bit small to grip.

We've tried to put the feeders at a "good" height for the average birds in the flock. Above bums, below heads. It's only day two with them in place. The goal is to calibrate the feedings so they clean the troughs out before they get too busy kicking up the litter again looking for more treats. Then we just need to dump the litter out of the troughs, and maybe rinse them out over at the Chicken Sink area if necessary before feedings. That's why we put a handle on them ... in case we need to rinse them out before every feeding. But I see the handle potentially being a convenient perch, as might be the cement blocks on either end.

We cut the opening just on the top side of the radius ... so it will be harder to scratch/bill feed out of these feeders. We hope.

That works with most men....

For some reason it can't come directly from a woman....even in the Bible that happened a few times and it always gives me a chuckle when I read it. Some things never change.

I love the name of Lucy for animals (had a great dog named Lucy)...just prayed for you about your horse. I know how hard it is to let go of a horse...they just become a part of you and it's hard to imagine them going on without you to live somewhere else.

I hope your knee heals quickly and also your broken heart....
