I've got one of my Cornish X defrosting in the fridge so I can roast it tomorrow. I know we aren't supposed to, but I like them. Yum! Then I only have two left from the ten we raised last spring/summer.

Then I get to start on the turkeys!

Not supposed to like CX??? Who says?

They taste like....chicken! I love CX birds...moochy, hard working, hardy and funny birds that are easy to process and taste mondo good!

I loved the little monsters. Even easier to raise than Turkeys, and they ate WAY less. Cute chicks ... but I couldn't get mine to go outside and eat grass ... so couldn't by any stretch call them "pastured."

We aren't supposed to like them because they have to be purchased from industrial ag ... even as hatching eggs or chicks. And they aren't sustainable.

But easy and delicious and efficient are compelling arguments ...

I can't even tell the dark meat from the white meat on mine unless the meat is still on the bone. Yum!

yes that chicken casorole will be fine. now back to those cornish x. they are fine birds to raise. they pasture fine . get them out early like 3 weeks old. make work for there food. they run jump after bugs. keep the food from their faces. they are sweet birds.they have great personalities.

Since when do we do anything "they" say we are supposed to do?

"He who is the most sustainable, cast the first chicken bone", I say! You show me anyone who is producing all their own chicks and the food that goes into them without having to get anything from an outside source and I'll let their opinions count on what is sustainable....until then, their opinions don't mean a ding diddly dang to me.

Next time you do a batch, get them out on the grass when they are 2 wks old and then just feed them twice a day....I'm betting you'll see some birds hungry enough to eat your fence posts. They'll forage or starve!

I do need to learn to be irie. I try hard not to worry, it is a lot easier when I am not 15 hours away.
For some reason, I have this irrational fear that something bad will happen and I am not there to be able to do anything about it. See, hardcore worrier.

We are looking to get some land when we buy our next place. Can't wait to plant garden and get some chickens.

We have 10 acres here, but it is near impossible to grow anything. With the elevation, the high mountain desert climate, the rocky soil and the lack of any organics in the soil, the gardening is a nightmare. I don't think raising chickens would be any easier, I have seen coyotes, badgers and foxes denning in our subdivision. We regularly have golden eagles hunting, along with hawks, bald eagles, and falcons. Did you know that golden eagles will hunt on foot if given the opportunity? Our neighbors watched an eagle stalk down a rabbit and snag lunch!

I'll have to post the video I made of mine while I suggested we go for a walk. They were magnetized to the feeders. I was afraid they'd be malformed if I starved them. First time mom and all that.

I saw all the foraging meat bird vids and photos before I got mine ... But I still let them eat free choice. DUMB! But they were huge and tasty ...

get a dog kennel run . you can find them cheap on craigslist.make a coop. cover the top . get yourself no more then 3 pullets. just make sure you critter safe your pen.
