The Front Porch Swing

Hi Windy! Our Winters here in Virginia probably don't compare to yours in Nova Scotia. Bet it lovely country up there. What kinds of chickens do you have? Are they doing OK in this cold?

You could even make him carry a back pack!  I have an online site that sells work harnesses and recreational harnesses if you can't find what you want at your dog store.  I think they even have links to instructional vids on how to use them but you can find many of those on YouTube.  If I had a good place to do it around here, I'd do some bikejoring with ol' Jake...that looks like some real fun!

Thanks. I will let you know. The first problem will be getting him to NOT chew up everything. He thinks he is too dignified for anything beyond a flea collar. He has chewed his share of nylon leashes in half while my head was turned. I have been leading him along and look and while he's walking along so nicely he is gnawing his way right through that leash. I have learned to use chain with him. He can chew through nylon so fast it is amazing. LOL

I make those same no bake cookies! Very simple, very satisfying. My family loves them. Cocoa, oatmeal and peanut butter, etc. :P

Yes, they are so quick and easy. Aren't they good? We have been making them around here as long as I can remember. Do yours ever mess up and come out really sticky? I love it when that happens, soooo good!

Checking in from Nova Scotia, Canada

Currently a balmy 25 F here with about 15" of the white fluffy stuff on the ground. Myself and the chickens are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Spring which, in all of our opinions, cannot get here soon enough !

Howdy ya'll

That's when you soak your leashes in a very hot sauce. You can do this by soaking pepper flakes in some warm water and let them steep for a couple of days, then strain and dip your leash or collar or harness in it and let it dry. Keep around the liquid in case it slowly wears off. You can also just dab some citronella oil on that leash...my dogs will kill themselves trying to get away from citronella oil.

Aha! Good idea.

Hi DC ! I'd say our winters are comparable in some regards, especially this winter. We, like ya'll, have been affected by the so called "Polar Vortex". It seems it has been snowing here non-stop pretty much since December. We're not used to such weather... We live practically on top of the ocean and that tends to moderate our weather by keeping it warmer in the winter and a bit cooler in the summer... This winter has been an exception to past winters.

I have a few BA's, BS', BR's and RIR's and hoping to add a few Cochin Frizzles to the mix this Spring :).

So far most have been fairing well in the cold; my BA rooster suffered some frostbite earlier this winter but has since made pretty much a full recovery. Bee gave me some advice on treatment for his comb so I dosed him good a few times with some castor oil and his comb is back to bright red at this point !! Other than that, most have made out well.

Good day, T-Dubya ! Hope all is well ! :)

Hi, Bee !! I wouldn't miss the front porch swing gathering for anything ! You folks are the best of kind and I just think the world of ya'll ! 'Tis fantastic to sit back on the swing, sip some beverage of choice and take in the beauty that Our Saviour has given to us and I can't think of better folk to do it with than all of you :)

For some reason I needed to prove to myself that walking through snow in flip-flops does create really cold feet almost instantly ... but I scored this photo!

That's the long side of the chicken coop, where the General Population lives, and we had already scraped the snow from the roof in preparation for the freezing rain they've promised us for later. It's still snowing ...

This is a photo out the front of the house. My driveway is out there somewhere, as is my car.

It's not actually all that cold, but in this part of Oregon we just don't cope well with this stuff. It's all going to get VERY heavy once it starts raining ...

Freezing rain tends to break tree limbs and overhead wires.

I'm not setting eggs until this storm is history.

Darn it, that's very frustrating as it was cool to have that convenient way to "index" the thread.
