The Front Porch Swing

Welcome to the Front Porch! Would you like Sweetened Tea or Unsweetened? All the goodies are over by Miss Bee. Pull up a bucket (watch out for the one that has a turtle under it), rocking chair, or a hay bale. You are even allowed to sit on the railing. Bring your dogs, cats, etc. and let them run with the others. The beautiful Percheron over there is Katee.

You are never too late to join our group. We love stories and pictures. You can vent whenever you want. We have all had our moments.

I am sorry for your loss. It sounds like you have a lot of your grandparents in you. Congratulations on your tomatoes!

What part of Oklahoma are you from? My husband is from Shawnee, OK.

Lisa :)
Oooh, sweet tea please!

Just wanted to share 15" of snow. We ended up getting quite the spring blizzard. The interstate closed Sunday morning and after snow and blowing for a day and a half, we have 4 to 6 foot drifts everywhere. This is out my dining room window. It is 36 degrees today, so the snow is melting, hence the green showing through. The wood fence on the right is 6' tall, and the little grow house is 4' tall at the back and was at one time yesterday, completely covered. That snowbank in the back is in front of a 4' snow fence. Hubby mowed on Saturday...

This is out our patio doors in the basement - can't open the doors yet, still have 2 feet of snow there.

Hope everyone is feeling warm and fuzzy now! This is not quite typical, but a friend of a friend drives plow for WYDOT and says he has plowed snow in every month of the year.

Yup, here in Wyoming we have 4 seasons....almost winter, winter, still winter, and getting ready for winter.

The cow is finally in the right pasture. Hubby managed to get her locked in today when she was intent on licking a salt block to death.
I am waiting for a phone call right now from my daughter. My granddaughter wants to come right now. They are meeting with the detective right now to see if he will approve the move and drop the charges. I hope it works out that she can come. She might hate it here. Cell phones don't work in the hollow where our house is. You have to go up to the top of the property to get service, then it isn't very good. We don't have cable or satellite tv. We were not watching it enough to justify the expense. Doug says we will reinstate it if she wants. Our internet is satellite and doesn't work when it is too cloudy. The only shopping is 20 minutes away and that is a Wal -mart and k mart. She lives across the street from a huge shopping area and her smart phone is attached to her 24/7. She will have our love and attention. A chance to meet some "country kids" maybe go muddin' and I guess learn to wear camo and shoot a bow!
I hope we can keep her busy and active and let her find her real self without the bad influences she had gotten into at home. Wish us luck and keep us in your prayers. I have been looking into alternative high schools. She only needs 15 hours to graduate and that will be part of the requirement to keep her out of trouble.

I hope and pray it works out. As for spotty cell service...most of these kids text, which does not require a great signal to go through....just an occasional one. So she won't be cut off.

I don't know what kind of charges she is/was facing, but the boonies is waaay better than jail!. The seclusion will give her time for reflection.

Hang in there.

I am so glad you got your cow home. Is she registered?

You and the granddaughter are in my prayers. Keep her busy and love her.

I was reading an article about snow and the garden. Here is what it said:

'nitrogen is deposited by the snow and absorbed either into the soil food web residing and active at low temperatures or by plants as a result of nitrogen fixation, a microbial activity which, astonishingly enough, can take place even at low temperatures. Even when the soil is frozen, its eventual thaw can result in the absorption of nitrogen.

Well, it turns out not only snow, but rain as well, contains nitrogen compounds that were suspended in air as they formed. It is estimated that 2 to 12 pounds of nitrogen are deposited per acre as a result of snow and rain.

No wonder the old wives’ tales called snow “the poor farmer’s fertilizer.”'
So wyoDreamer and Blooie, you guys should have a fantastic garden this year!

OK, rethinking my dream of moving to Wyoming.

. Flash flood warnings for much of Wisconsin today but the real severe weather is south of us. Building our coop will take a little longer, looks like rain everyday until the weekend. I have 8, month old chickens in the basement waiting for a new home. I brought a few of them out to the garden with me on Sunday for little field trip. It was the first time outside for them. I'm really enjoying my new adventure as a chicken mama.
Welcome to the porch Michalbeth7.

OK folks, here's a turtle story for you. Perhaps the turtle under the bucket is a direct descendent of the turtles I grew up with. When I was a kid, I was blessed to have pets of every kind, including the typical rodents, reptiles, farm animals, birds, and the occasional wild critter. I often had one of the little green turtles that they used to sell in the pet and department stores. My bedroom was kind of like a jungle, with a parakeet, mouse or hamster, tropical fish, crayfish, and a little green turtle. There were so many plants in there that it would take several gallons of water to get them all watered. Well, one day, my little green turtle went missing. I cleaned the whole room, top to bottom, and even cleaned the ductwork at the 2 registers, where I figured that he must have eventually fallen, and turned into a turtle fossil. I never did find him, and gave him up for dead. Fall turned into winter, then into spring, and the turtle was forgotten. One day, I was watering my jungle, which was long over due for water, and I noticed that the soil in one fairly large pot was bubbling quite a bit. So I added some more water and watched. The water level drained down, and it continued to bubble... then, to my surprise, one of those bubbles winked at me. I dug around in the pot with my finger, and extracted one very reluctant turtle. Washed the mud off him, and set him up in a terrarium. He was no worse for the wear!

No fair! With that bad boy you'll leave the rest of us in the dust and be able to keep up with the fastest moving place on BYC! Absolutely! Happy Mother's Day to you too, tntchx! Yeah, that too! And welcome Beth! I think it's probably safe to sit on the bucket with the turtle - by now he's probably turned to dust. Hey, that reminds me of a Ma thing....shall I share? No? Well too bad, gonna anyway! Ma loved a neat clean house. But 5 kids and a heart condition didn't make it easy. Ma was old school - I think I mentioned once that when someone would pull up for an unexpected visit she'd drag out the vacuum, a dust rag, or something, and then tell the visitors she was glad they were there, she needed to take a coffee break and they gave her the perfect excuse. One day she walked into the kitchen where I was doing dishes and dropped her dust cloth on the table. I wiped my hands and poured her a cup of coffee, then sat down with her for a minute. She had a look she'd get on her face sometimes...we called it her, "The hell with it all" look. So I said, "Ma, you okay? You look a little frazzled." She took a big sip of her coffee and said, "Well, I got the vacuuming done and the last of the laundry put away." She sighed. "I started the dusting, but then I got to thinking about what the Good Book says." I must have looked as confused as I felt, because she winked at me. "Bible says we came from dust, and we shall return to dust. That means there's a lot of people coming or going in my living room and just for today I'm leaving them alone."
