The Front Porch Swing

Ok final final figures on the fire.... 800+- acres, 300 evacuations.... The police chief said that 20,000 figure was someone making a guestimate.... LOL. They have the fire contained mop up will continue through the night. No houses were lost no lives were lost and no people were injured.

Whew

I have lived through two firestorms in San Diego 2003 and 2007 First one we lost 1500 homes and 15 lives.... second we lost 2000 homes and about the same amount of lives. IN the first one we were evacuated twice...

A boat load of people got in trouble for the way the fire departments were not communicating. A plan was drawn up and for this fire everythihg worked No one had to ask permission to do their job in someone elses district. It could have been bad very bad.... Yay for people actually forming a plan and working it....

I am so glad that the guestimate was so far off, and that there were no homes lost or injuries. Thank God for His grace!

It was an entertaining afternoon for him, right? If mama came along they might have come after the people.
Yep. He was captured on a cell phone lounging in the neighbor's backyard. The problem was that we could not get anyone to come get it and take it to an open area. It was just wandering the streets. The attack came in the middle of the night, so no humans were hurt. All the police/animal control said is that they'd kill it. Really? Why is it so hard to use a tranquilizer gun, then set it free in an appropriate area?

Today we had to evacuate because of a fire, so these new chickens had some excitement too. They all survived...as did we. No chicken dinners.

: )

We are getting the rains you all are missing...supposed to rain every day this week. It rained so hard here this evening that it was like being in a washing machine, with wind coming from all directions. We couldn't believe our electric didn't go down. I wish I could send some out west to you ladies. Will hold you all in my heart during this hard time in your lives.

Re: Bernardo Fire

Hey! I'm in San Diego too!! We were evacuated. Heard on the radio (KOGO at 7pm) there was one house totaled or partially damaged and one person died, with 700+ acres burned and 1000 people evacuated. There's always conflicting reports. Not sure if that's the final count b/c I don't get broadcast news on my TV.

My daughter was running errands at the 4S shopping center right where and when it first started. We are a teenie bit south of the fire, but still had to load up three cars with 2 kids, 5 adults, 3 dogs, 2 cats... we did leave the fish, snake and chickens (no more room in the cars!) Yes, what a day!

Glad to have you on the porch. Sorry about your chickens. Darn mountain lions. I can't imagine it. Where are you from? I'm NW La. the deep south. ha. Please come back and visit. We're good folks. Talk a LOT. But that's ok.
Thanks Linda. I'm in San Diego. I've lived here most of my life with a 10 year stint in LA (not NOLA). Our new Chicks are doing well.

Hey I answered your question about the clock board.... I am in San Diego too. I lost my chckens to predators last summer.... My place is in Jacumba but I live down here in Santee for the time being.

Mountain lions travel between communities here because so much of San diego is built on the Mesas and the valleys between are left unchanged.

Thanks Deb! Sorry about your chickens. My mom has a place in Boulevard. Just a hop, skip and jump from Jacumba. I used to go to the Library there to get the internet on my computer. I stayed out there for 10 months and that was all I could stand. Yes, here in SD we live with so many different wild animals. We also had some sightings/problems when I live in LA. Mostly at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. We've been invaded by raccoons (ate our pastries that were inside the car), opossums, scorpions, and coyotes--sometimes when we are camping and a few made it into our yard. Bears ravaged our cooler once. SoCal is SO fun!

I also used to live in the Fletcher Hills area next to Santee and up the hill from the Taylor guitar factory. Boy was that convenient. Now I'm in Rancho Penasquitos (close to the Carvin factory/showroom and plenty of wide open spaces full of scrub brush. grrrrrr.). During the 2003 fire loads of houses burned by the school I worked at (and some of my students were friends with the girl that died) and then during the 2007 fire I worked in Rancho San Diego and we had to evac for that fire too. So many people lost homes.

Okay, going to bed now.
