The Front Porch Swing

Prayer works!

I thank God for a good resolution of that fire.

Wow, yet again I got way far behind. So I jumped to the end. Hope everyone is doing well! I have expanded my little flock. A breeder of Cubalaya's in VA got his certifications and shipped me 4 pullets, 2 white and 2 blacks. They of course got lost in the mail for one day! Thankfully, it is pretty hot up there (90's), so they were getting used to the heat and we had we had a odd cool front come through 70's for a few days, so they were okay. Once a little older they will move into the pen with the rest of the Cub flock. Here is their pic, they are 8 weeks old:

Then I got sick and tired of not having that many eggs (out of 5 cub girls, I get an average of 2 eggs a day) so I started stalking Craigslist, but ALL laying hens were starting at $25 at the cheapest, most were $30-$35. Then I came across a post for Leghorn girls that just started to lay for $12 each, 4H project that had come to an end. I figured, they will be egg machines for about another year and a half, then I can use them for chicken stock. So I bought 5 (was only planning to get 3, LOL). Here they are:

The coop is 6x8 and the run around them is 10x20, so they should be good and they get to rang on alternating days from my Cubalaya flock. I am putting my 2nd in command roo in with them, he won't be lonely anymore.

Not exactly chicken math, but kind of! At least this time I am 100% set up and this should be a LOT less stressful than last year. Can't wait to get some eggs!!!

Leghorns are loud but egg machines. I was think about the Excaliber Leghorns. So pretty and the disposition is more docile and quieter.

Thanks! Wait, they are loud? These girls seem very calm and not at all flighty like I have heard and I figured since they were in a new area they would be at their worst. Maybe they are being on their best behavior right now so I won't get rid of them, then when they settle in......

They were also raised by kids so maybe that has something to do with it.

Excaliber Leghorns are VERY pretty!!! Never in a million years would I think I would have Leghorns, but then again never thought I would fall in love with Cubalaya's either....Chickens!!!

I cook like you ladies... I'm an improv cook. My dear husband says, and I quote "You have never cooked anything I didn't like." It's like a game of Iron chef.. with less fancy ingredients. Half the time I don't even know what I'm cooking until it's done

I can never cook something the exact same way twice though... I can come close, but never the same.

Glad to hear the fire is going down, Deb.

That's how I cook too...I think my recipe box has around 10 recipes in it...about 3 or 4 of those are Mom's old recipes for hot pepper butter, Coney Island hot dog sauce, whole wheat bread, brown beans(had to do HER recipe or the boys just didn't like the beans...

). Everything else comes out of the head according to whatever ingredients are on hand. Nothing is ever fancy or requiring of a lot of different ingredients and we try to stick with ingredients that are not processed already.

If I had to follow recipes all the time I'd go crazy! A glorp of this, a handful of that, a pinch of these and stir it all up is the usual directions to my "recipes".

Today was gorgeous once again....cool, sunny with clouds, absolutely dreamy! Worked on one project for most of the day that didn't turn out well and was the most frustrating project I'd ever done...and it's still not done. And it was supposed to be about an hour's worth of work, tops. Grrrr! But, I was outside, breathing the fresh air and getting dirty all over again, so I'm not complaining much...life is good and God is great!

Gave the ducklings some worms today and they finally caught on...good nutrition and good for them to practice their foraging skills. They are loving their little brooder, the heated swimming pool and all the other "warm" things. I'm praying they fare well from here on out because I really love the looks of them and the older KC I have is a dynamo forager and wild as a snake.

Around here it's best if the livestock isn't too friendly...they tend to hang out by the back steps and mooch, or get in your way with every chore and mooch, or hang around and mooch when you are trying to relax....a little moochy is good but when you can't walk through the yard or sit down without being covered over, it gets a little much. Mom likes it if they stay "up there" in the upper half of the yard and leave their little packages where we don't walk. Dream on.

Sure is very quiet around here today without the meaties...I hadn't realized just how much noise a few meaties can make but I'm sure glad to be done with it. I may get a few in August to raise for fall processing..that's when the forage is most high here and they can finish out when it's cool so the heat won't affect them so very much. Or I may just get the cheap meat roosters that are advertised free around here and get my meat for free.
