The About.com article is the least scary. but it does talk about the toxicity during Autumn and that the red and fallen leaves even the dried up ones are the culprits.

The quail are hatching like crazy. I had 7 when I went to bed last night. Woke up to 10 this morning and more pipping and zipping. I'm off to find a tote. These may be bob white quail. Got to find the postman and ask him. These little brats move fast. Can't open the bator without at least one jumping out. I am trying to keep the humidity up for the remaining eggs. Guess I had better set up a brooder. Wish me luck. Thanks for the info Laura.

No problemo. I've never raised bob whites and I'm glad I don't have to. Those are a bit flighty, but I think like any bird that they can get used to being around. I also think here in Texas, you have to have a permit to raise them. Not sure, though. Good luck on them, though! I'm sure they are going to be a fun experience for you and your granddaughter!

I have had the most devastating news this morning. My youngest daughter is three months along in pregnancy. Her ultra sound done yesterday shows the baby is alive with normal development; however the child has no brain.....

It is hard to see the keyboard while crying uncontrolably.

Please pray for her......her name is Brandi......she is going to be faced with some horrible decisions in her near future.

Prayers are being out from me and my family to yours. I'm really praying right now that the doctor was wrong, but if not, we've just got to have faith and let time unravel our paths.

SURE! I bet you and Rebekah would get along fine and there is WAY too much to do on this old house. How are you are fixing 160+ year old post and beam barns? Besides that, given your ancestry, we are probably related. Well, VERY DISTANTLY related. You'll have to skip the tropical flowers though, unless you want to pay a FORTUNE to heat a hot house. They don't grow well up here.

With a little guidance, I'd probably be pretty good at fixing 160+ year old houses. And Dad is gonna teach how to weld, soon, I can help with that! Then again, let's not get carried away here. This is a house an my experience is mostly with chicken coops and rabbit hutches.

Haha, I bet we are related in some way! I've found family members of mine in all sorts of places. The Dominican Republic, New Jersey, Spain, and I think there are a few in Ireland. Who is to say I didn't find one in Vermont while browsing through chicken forums, haha!

Lost one of my white rock pullets this morning, almost 8 wks old. Something got in my Fort Knox and killed only her. Strange. The only area that is available is a 2" strip by the door. Going to replace door. Hummmmmm

Sad.

I forgot to mention that I'm getting Cotton Patch Goose eggs! A lady in Houston decided that she really wants a paint egg of her prize bull, so we are trading. Look at how lovely her geese are!

I can't wait to see what happens. Another hen went broody and since she's not on any eggs, it'll be her job to hatch these babies out. That's a grand total of 5 broody hens. (not including another game hen who hasn't left her nest. She gets in weird spouts of broodiness but she never pulls through. Don't know what the heck is up with her.)

Wow, never heard that about the leaves from the red maples being toxic to horses. With all the horse pastures with maple trees in them that can be found where I grew up, you would think that would be a commonly known fact. Well, thinking on it, most of the maples in the area I grew up are the sugar maples, which, according to the article I read, is not as big of a problem. Never heard of anyone having a horse die from eating maple tree leaves, but it does sound like it is mostly a problem with wilted or dried leaves. Filed that info away for the future. I was thinking of planting some maples along the property line the neighbor bought and is going to put his horse pasture. Not doing that now.

First time I read about it was on a Draft horse forum. The poisoning can also be contributed to spontaneous fetus abortion.

Enola there are no words, I myself lost 7 babies, and I was the lucky one in my family. Listening to the doctors and maybe talking with other parents might help. I worked special ed most my life in one form or another. Regardless of what we feel every person chooses their own journey. I was pregnant with my 4th daughter the same time as a good friend of mine, we both were on #6 and both had our amniocentesis done same week. I got a baby girl and she got a downs son. They decided to go through with the pregnancy and he will turn 18 next month. She had many rough days and nights but their life was a blessing with him. My prayers to your family and you got hundreds of folks sending up prayers and reaching out with hands and shoulders.
I have no updates on my fil besides he is still in the hospital. I also noticed a funeral tent today so maybe it wont be good ending. Sadly a niece is getting married this week too and with customary mourning it will be hard, I know some even delay weddings but I dont know right now. Since ive been here hes gone in and out but never more than few hours. He is in Gods hands.

Linda: I'm guessing that you have a weasel who will be back again. If not that, perhaps a rat. Have you been to the predator page? There are some charts and descriptions of the kind of damage done by various predators. It may help you to determine who did it, and a course of action.

Ohhh Enola, how horrible. I am so sorry. You, Brandi and your whole family will be in my prayers. Praying for your strength and a miracle for your grandbaby. Huge hugs to you and your Brandi.

After going outside and doing some leaf picking, I have found that I may have 3 different types of maples. The largest and closest to the house I am sure is a red maple. The other two may be sugar maples and/or norway maples. I took some pics and will be checking with my husbands Aunt and Uncle-- amazing people when it comes to these things. Regardless, it seems they all pose a potential threat. It will be sad to lose the trees. The provide privacy from the road and are beautiful in the fall.

Another option would be to see if we can rent a portion of our neighbor's field and put up a temporary fence. One more year and about 20 trees down in back would have been perfect, though.
