... I believe it's ZZ (male) /ZW (female) Chromozones in Chickens... And it's the female that determines sex, not males like in mammals...

Just to double check...

Quote from wikipedia "The ZW sex-determination system is a system that determines the sex of offspring in birds, some fish and crustaceans such as the giant river prawn, some insects (including butterflies and moths), and some reptiles, including komodo dragons. In the ZW system, the ovum determines the sex of the offspring, in contrast to the XY sex-determination system and the X0 sex-determination system, wherein the sperm determines the sex. The letters Z and W are used to distinguish this system from the XY system. Males are the homogametic sex (ZZ), while females are the heterogametic sex (ZW). The Z chromosome is larger and has more genes, like the X chromosome in the XY system."

Good post. Hey Bee, maybe that's why all your girls give pullets.

Good morning! What a lot of Porch chat to catch up with this morning! Deb, I hope you're not suffering your Cabernet today. Congrats on the book you're writing. A phenomenal word count and nice ideas on how to fuel the creative process.

Loved the cowboy poem, Bee. Thanks. And Sallysunshine for expressing what I was feeling so succinctly too. And way to go Blooie! Town council needs you. Glad you find it so fulfilling.

Do we get starred out if we spell peeta normally? Anyway I had a lady call and ask if she could come over and visit my barn when we were shearing because she had seen a documentary that said shearing was cruel to the sheep and she wanted to find out for her self. Well obviously she saw it didn't hurt them at all, simply deprived them of a hot coat they didn't need anymore. But honestly, what weird misinformation.

Sorry about the spelling.

No ill effects from the Cabernet.

One of the people I was in grad school with, and am now FB friends with, and is one of those gloriously beautiful redheads that makes you stare, and is is a buddhist, and is an animal-rights activist vegan, and is also a somewhat renowned author of book(s? -- we were in grad school for writing) and articles about dogs. Here is a link to her recent article ... about having a predator for a pet.

I admit I could only read a few paragraphs of this article. I want to read it well and report back to her all of my glowing, praising responses to it, because I feel a personal connection to Lee, but when I do try to read it I just get very, very, very sad. But not as sad as I got while trying to read her facebook posts about how she handled the passing of her last beloved dog. I mention my personal reaction to the perspective presented in her writing for full disclosure, not because I want to trash Lee. I know she is speaking for a lot of people with similar & genuine challenges ...

I've often wondered how animal rights activist vegans can have pets ... so I try to read some of their writings about it every once in a while. I usually just end up very, very, very sad. This is another area where my undisciplined "soft" heart does me no favors.

Sorry, I would have NOTHING in common with this woman. I'm sure she is nice, but..........

I was slated to take classes but the whole roommate issue started in. I actually bought it because she told me she was afraid of the illegals.

She told me a group of illegals had come up to the house after dark and stood just out of clear sight in the driveway. One man had come up and hollered to her from quite a bit closer... She was always up at night with the TV going. Late night person like me.

The Roommate used to be a Skeet shooter and an avid hunter. So I figured there is no one that doesnt know the sound of a shot gun being cocked.

This happened after she had been living there about three years.

I will probably sell it again at a local gun shop.

Deb - you always have an interesting solution to a problem!!! Reminds me of the children's story "Strega Nona" who had a magic pot that made pasta. She wnet to visit a friend and her hired help decided to try it and couldn't stop it... so the pasta took over the whole town until Strega Nona showed up... Then his punishment was to eat all the pasta so she could sleep in her bed...

Now that I read that, I have no idea why your shotgun story reminds me of that, but hey! Happy Saturday morning, and I am glad that your Cabarnet didn't turn too cabaret!

The arrangement for skimming things off the top of the pot of turkey broth.

Step stool, Labrador, stack of smaller pots ... I'm getting a turkey steam facial.
