Any of ya'll have any clue what the heck would cause this ? It was in the nestbox this afternoon; looks like two eggs attached together, without shells. It's like the membrane under the shell, and the shell forgot to form. Is there anything to be alarmed about when seeing something like this ?

I would just make sure they have plenty of oyster shell available. One thing I noticed this winter is that even though my oyster shell dispenser was full of oyster shell, it had been rained on (it is out in their run) and then it got frozen for several days or a week or more. So there was plenty of oyster shell but they couldn't get any of it. Now, if it gets cold I make sure its not all frozen together.

He really is such a sweetie! He can be very intimidating though! Lisa, he doesn't jump up on you at all! He is the most well-mannered dog I have ever had. The only thing is that he will demolish pillows or blankets, and likes my boots. And he has perfected the Dane-lean....

Now that thar is one perdy dog! How is he with your chickens? Years ago when I had Dobermans we never once had a problem with stray dogs/neighbor dogs running loose causing problems. I guess they just knew better than to come here. Lately there is a dang pack of neighbor dogs running loose! I guess I'm going to have to get another dog or dogs that will take care of them! I wish I had an Anatolian that would take real good care of them! LOL ...but I also have to worry about whether the dog will bite people too. That got a little tricky with the Dobermans. I need a chicken and people friendly but stray dog and predator agressive dog! I don't ask for much huh? LOL

You'll want a female GP....she will be very territorial and also family friendly.

But then....that also leaves the issue of which research does one believe because sure as shootin' as soon as you see research for something there will be a research against it, much like in human health concerns and diets.  First coffee is bad, then it's good, then eggs are bad but now they are good but, wait!... now they are bad again...ad nauseum. 

I pretty much just lean on common sense for the most part and let everyone else argue about dietary percentages of their ever more complicated feed mixes.  Granny got by on shelled out whole corn she grew on the farm and free range and if it comes to reverting to that when the chips are down that's exactly what I will do too.

When I grew up kids were forced to learn how to entertain themselves. Kids learned how to think for themselves. They learned to speak good English, work out math problems, read a book and actually understand the story line, and enjoy science projects. Our parents were INVOLVED in our entire life. While I am sure some kids are being properly raised by loving parents this is not the norm any more.

He does great with the chickens. Unfortunately, he hasn't kept the neighbor's dogs from killing chickens... I am thinking that once the Dane is gone, I will be adding either a G.Pyrenees or a Maremma. We had a pack of coyotes run through last night, and since I am going to be getting a couple of dairy goats this year, I think we are going to need a LGD, that will stay with the livestock. The dane is getting older and is already having some joint issues. They generally don't live but 7-9 years, and he is going to be 6 next month!

I know you will hate to lose him. Losing a good ol' dog can break your heart for sure. I had two neighbor's dogs kill the last two dairy goats I had. They ripped their throats out and just slaughtered them! I tell ya, I felt like throwing up for a week! And of course my dogs probably would have helped them if they could have. It is hard to find a good all-around dog worth his keep anymore!
