Pretty cool website, isn't it? Makes me want to make soap or something. lol I've never made soap or cheese and want to do both!

Here is a link for some less expensive castor oil that Bee gave me. I paid $5-6 dollars for 4 ounces at Walgreen's! It is soooo much cheaper on this website, got to order some.

I bet this stuff would be a good wrinkle preventative. It feels good on the skin.

TW, is there a difference between this Castor Oil and the ones at the store? I bought mine at Kroger's and it says it is 100% Castor Oil.

Back to the "permies" discussion - if you are at all interested there are some amazing things that people have done with Permaculture. Here are a couple videos if you want some uplifting stories for the day! As I said yesterday, there are many whacky whackos on Permies.com, but some of the ideas have real merit, particularly with regards to catching and storing water in dry areas.

1. Here is a video of bringing organic agriculture to the saline desert of Jordan -
(short version - or her eis part 1 of the long version -
)

2. Here is an initiative across Africa to build a 15km wide "Great Green Wall" to not only stop the spread of the sahara, but help the communities in the area have local food and water (The Great Green Wall - http://www.csf-desertification.eu/c...ion/item/the-african-great-green-wall-project - video:
)

3. Here is a TED talk from a zoologist who works on Orangutans, who figured out a way to rebuild a jungle to both support people and teh endangered orangutans using Permaculture principles. Ibn doing so, in just 4-5 years he brought back some of the original local wet climate that had all but disappeared due to over harvesting the rainforest for oil palms. (Will Smits saving orangutans: http://www.ted.com/talks/willie_smits_restores_a_rainforest.html).

4. A closer to home example is turning to Tuscon's water strategy of harvesting rainwater in curb cuts instead of flushing it directly to and through the sewer system, which ultimately has changed the landscape in Tucson, changed the policy on curbs and curb cuts, and won many awards (http://www.motherearthliving.com/gardening/water-wise-oasis.aspx?PageId=1).

Just want to show that not ALL permie stuff is nutso - some has real world and huge impact.

Of course, these are HUGE projects, small projects work too - just a difference of scale!

I'm not really sure but I bet the ones in the stores are "refined" like this one on the website. I see there is another one that says it is "sulfated". Not sure about that.

My mom is a massage therapist and she always told me to get cold pressed castor oil.

It warmed up today, and was 58*. The snow is melting, and there is ground showing through in patches.... I shoveled some of the snow in the run so I could throw some leaf and pine needle litter on top of the snow, because they REFUSED to walk on anything white! It was quite funny because just as soon as I threw it on top of the snow, they were busy scratching through it! Pampered chickens!
I did find out that my great uncle passed away this morning. Please keep the family in your prayers... I need to cook something and take it up there tomorrow as long as the roads are passable.

And of course... PICTURES!

@Lindaz... I'm very sorry to hear about your Great Uncle. I hope he lived a very full life. Saying a prayer for the family and friends.

cold pressing doesnt change the nature of the oil.... Hot pressing gets more oil out and I believe its done with steam to assist. It does change the oil.... decreasing the shelf life for one thing.... you would have to talk to an expert in the field to find out what changes it does.
