The Front Porch Swing

Good Morning Linda!

Yes it was the neighbor's dogs. I call it a 'frenzy' killing. They just went from one bird to the next killing them. Just a waste. I lost 12 chickens and have 2 left. They also killed 2 rabbits. These were rabbits that were wild but tame in the sense that Ken and I could walk right by them and they wouldn't move.

My two girls that are left finally ventured out of the coop this morning. They aren't eating much yet. I went back out and my only laying hen was sitting on the nest. (The other hen I kept because she survived a dog attack 3 years ago).

I am doing better. It is just so quiet around here. I miss the roosters crowing and I don't have anyone greeting me when I go outside. We have some work to do before I can get anymore. The dogs tore the fencing up on one side.

Lisa :)

I know exactly what you are going through! We have had several incidents with the neighbor's huskies coming and killing our chickens. I have decided that next time, the huskies won't be going home. They do the same thing, just killing for the fun and going from one to the next. Have you talked to your neighbor about the killing spree? In NC the dog owner is liable for damages, and can also be fined for not keeping the dogs on their property. It might help them keep them home, otherwise like in my case the only way to fix it may be S>S>S

I am getting a rifle for my birthday........ getting ready to go hillbilly on some dogs in my neighborhood.

My neighbors have started turning their dogs loose when they see my car missing from the driveway. I discovered this fact when it snowed last week. I could see their tracks all around the barn/coop. Followed the tracks straight back to their driveway........

I'm feeling a little smug at the moment because I wrote to some companies to tell them I found their retail websites lacking in useful information, and I've already gotten two replies. One company even updated their website a bit, and promised to work on making some of their product details more "user friendly." I only wrote to them yesterday.

It's nice to have an impact.

Some dang people are so ignorant. They tick me off more than their dogs do! I had this problem about five years ago then me and a neighbor had words last year AND I see a huge problem brewing again about a half a mile down the road. I saw one dog limping down the road a week or two ago. Somebody probably already tagged his hiney. I hate to have to shoot a dog but somebody and their dog(s) is not going to run my place! You know, years ago dogs and their owners weren't so stupid. A chicken killing dog was killed because the chickens in the yard were FOOD. People couldn't run to town and buy meat from the grocery. If they didn't grow it or buy it from a neighbor they didn't have meat to eat. Now dogs are worshipped in this country and everything else is far beneath them to a whole lot of people. Mankind gets a little more backward all the time.

I know what you mean. Do you guys remember Michael Vick, the pro football player that was involved in dog fighting, etc.? He spent 4 years in prison. Now what he did was very wrong, but another player Donte Stallworth was DUI and killed a pedestrian. He received a month in jail, 2 years house arrest, and lifetime loss of his drivers' license. Does that make any sense?? Not to me.

Oh my goodness! I think there would be some dead dogs pretty soon. As in the next time I saw them.

Were they Australorps? Maybe there is a breeder somewhere close by that you can get some more from?
I lost 2 Australorps, 5 Speckled Sussexs, and 5 Barred Rocks. I have one Australorp (laying) and one Barred Rock (non-laying) left. The dogs haven't showed up since Sunday. Are they home because of the ice....I don't know.

SSS is definitely next.

This is all so sad.

Not that this is what I'd do ...

... but I'm curious IF you've tried to talk to the neighbor about it, what has the neighbor said?

Thank you Lisa. Those dogs have killed all of my chickens they are going to. They killed all of my breeding roosters (6) but one last spring. Ruined my entire breeding season. The neighbors kept the dogs home for MONTHS after the dog warden told them how many times I had won chicken massacre cases in court. Guess they are stupid as I thought they were.

I don't mind you asking. This neighbor also has cows. His cows have been jumping the fence and getting on our property. We have gone to him several times telling him about it. The last time he said, 'I am home for the next 4 weeks. I will move the cows and fix the fence'. The cows were moved but then they were back. DH and I fixed the fence. We understand from another neighbor he will not do his part to fix the fences on his property. He has 4-5 dogs that run loose. They run the calves ragged on other properties (seen it). It wouldn't do any good.

3 of the Speckled Sussex were purebred (if that is a word for chickens). I had high hopes this Spring for them, not anymore. When I think that my black beauties (Australorps) won't be around, that just kills me. Those 3 were always together. Got to get busy......
