The Front Porch Swing

I'm exhausted! I just spent 8 hours in front of a computer. I got work done, though! 10 posters, 1 business card, and revisions on several flyers were all completed today. I have another business card and a couple signs to finish up tomorrow and that'll be the last of my internship. (I'm pretty sure this is just unpaid servitude, though, haha!)

I'm gonna have to sell a couple painted eggs to make up for the time I spent working without pay. I need to make sure I have extra cash for my student loans 'cause Mama will offer to pay and I can't let her do it.

So much to do, so little will to do it, haha! I sure have missed seeing my birds these last couple days, though. I've only seen them in the evenings and I haven't had a chance to watch them roaming the yard. :(

3 of the Speckled Sussex were purebred (if that is a word for chickens). I had high hopes this Spring for them, not anymore. When I think that my black beauties (Australorps) won't be around, that just kills me. Those 3 were always together. Got to get busy......

Lisa :)

So sorry about your loss Lisa.

I had to do a couple of errands for my dad today.... that is always a chore. When hubby got home, we finished another wall in the big coop, and hopefully by this weekend we will be able to move the chickens in!
Dad called yesterday asking if I wanted/ would take 14-15 RIRs. A guy that works for him was asking because his grandmother has some that she is wanting to give away. Apparently, she has had a weasel or something kill a couple and isn't able to fix the coop, and doesn't want to lose any more. I told him that I guess I could take them after I got my big coop done, so I can put them into my little coop, before putting everyone together in a month or two. Also, my husband's aunt is wanting a few of them as well....

It looks like a great property for ... DUCKS!!!
That's what I was going to say!!

I would like to ask for prayers for my son. He is home from Navy boot camp, he didn't get to finish due to an ankle fracture, the x-ray revealed bone abnormalities, so the service is no longer an option for him. Now he's thinking about rushing into marriage with his girlfriend, because her mother is dying of cancer and she wants her mom to see her get married before she dies. Neither one of them has a job and they are living with her parents. I just think it is not the right reason to jump into such a big commitment. Anyway, if you guys could pray that the Lord watch over him and guide him to the right decision.

Thanks,
Michelle
Absolutely. I have a daughter who's decided she's going to be a stay-at-home "wife". Neither of them have jobs. Sigh. Will be praying.

Got a phone call from the boyfriend of the woman whose dogs killed my chickens. He couldn't understand why we called animal control! Why couldn't we just be "neighborly". Well when it happened I offered to help them build a run for the dogs and she wasn't interested. After all, we live in the country and they should be able to run.Thats when I got animal control involved. He called me 3 times this afternoon screaming about going to court and getting the law involved. My husband called him back and again offered to help him build a run for the dogs. We told him if they built the run and kept the dogs in we would not ask for compensation for the 11chickens we lost. He couldn't quite get that there is a containment law here. We will see what happens. Sorry, I just needed to vent.

UGH! Record the phone calls. In TN only one side has to be aware that the conversation is being recorded. Learned that from the ex. File harassment as well with the recordings as your base.

Just keep reminding yourself how it will look on your resume.

I've missed a ton of stuff! Was outside hauling wood, cleaning the stock tank for chicks here in the next couple of weeks, playing hide-n-seek with a 5-year old (which by the way, the chickens kept giving me away because they would see me hunkered down somewhere and come running to see why I was on their level), boiling down chicken bone scraps for the cats, inspecting my limping duck and putting cider vinegar in all the puddles.

And I found something odd - one of my layers who was a chick last spring has a VERY clearly protruding breast on one side only. Normally the keel shifts sides as they walk, this stayed right where it was on the left side and is huge. She's a red sex link that got into the EE box and home with me, hasn't layed very often but is bright eyed, eats plenty, shiny feathers. What is up with the lump? It must be 2-3 times the size of the other side. Has anybody seen this before? I figured she wasn't laying because it was winter. Should have known better with a sex link.

I can't believe I didn't see this before. My only excuse is she doesn't hold still long enough and I never really saw her at such an angle before - straight on in front at her level while she's walking.

Just wanted you folks to know....what I asked you to pray for? He was faithful to answer and it has meant so very much to me, you have no idea! When next I need prayer, I'm surely going to ask you folks. I don't really have any other group of church members or people to pray for me, so you guys were the only ones I could think of....so glad I did! I thank God for you all...you are all so dear to me!

Cider vinegar in the water puddles. What a good idea. Note to self: keep extra ACV on hand for when it rains.

The lump on the front of your chicken, located on one side of the keel bone... might it be her crop? Sometimes they really stuff themselves and make it protrude quite a bit. I think it looks nasty and can't stand it when my birds do that... I have one in particular that absolutely engorges herself. Yuk!

Michelle, you have my prayers also! Please give your son a BIG hug and tell him not to give up on his dreams. If not the Navy, maybe he look into being a law enforcement officer.

Oh dang. I'm sorry to hear that. You're kinda in a quandary...should you get more chickens if the dogs might come back??
At this point, I want to at least get a couple of layers for Lena. She looks so tiny in that huge coop. I let her out in the yard yesterday, but she doesn't stay long. She heads back to the coop.

I appreciate everyone prayers and thoughtful replies.

Bee, you always have my prayers!

Lisa :)
