The Front Porch Swing

The very first thing I did was wrap it in two wool army blankets. They came off of my bed. My bf says now you will freeze tonight!

But I won't it is 60º here tonight.
Do you have gas or electric hot water heater. Gas or electric stove? I don't much about incubating eggs (except that I haven't the patience to do it) but I know that humidity is an issue and you have to be careful. But maybe if you filled a big jar with hot water (assuming gas here), wrapped it a towel, and put it between the wool blankets and the incubator it would help hold some heat in too. Same thing with maybe heating a rice bag very carefully in the oven you could do the same thing. You can light an electronic ignition with a match. Not sure how'd you'd monitor the incubator temp but it might help just for overnight. I know, back in the corner, Diane.

No, not back in the corner. Those are good ideas. If there is room inside the incubator and you are able to get some hot water, that would help a lot. Or the rice even. She won't have to worry about humidity just overnight.

Yep...that sound has become to mean more to me than mere frogs in the spring.  They are the sound of hope after a long, hard winter, the end of a tough school year, and the sound of new life beginning once again.  They herald fresh night air, spring blossoms scenting the night, good talks out on a darkened porch with those you love as you make plans for spring and summer.  Spring peepers are a song about everything that is good in life after you've been through a lot of hard times that seemed to last forever.

They bring back memories of playing outside with the neighbor kids until your mom has to shout at you~"If I have to yell at you again, it will be the last time...come in NOW!"  Of pick up softball/kickball/football games out in the dust until you are grimy tired but still too excited to go to sleep at night, so you keep talking long after the lights have went out and your parents threaten you to "stop talking!".

It's flashlight tag, king of the hill, the taste of Whistle brand pop, secret centers and fishing until dark and beyond.  It's about merthiolate painted on a scraped knee that stings so bad that your mom has to blow on it, of best friends and bicycle rides, school's out and summer stretches like eternity in front of you.  It's tents made of old blankets in the side yard and giggles in the dark as each one tries to stay awake the longest on a sleep over.  They are poly-wogs in a jar, nightcrawlers in an old coffee can, the very first lightning bugs rising out of the grass and the smell of polecat in the early morning dew.

It's kittens in the hay shed, freshly laid eggs in a nest, little biddies running around and the beginning of a new garden.  Everything you can imagine that is good and life affirming, peepers embody it.

They aren't just frogs, they are harbingers of spring and all the goodness you've ever known during those seasons.  :weee

When I was a little girl I was standing out by our car one day on a clear, sunny day with blue sky...not a rain cloud in the sky...and spring peepers started raining out of the sky and bouncing off the car, the pavement, my arms and hair.  Hundreds upon hundreds of tiny, tiny frogs came showering down out of a clear, blue sky!  I'll never forget that!

Oh Bee. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. We don't have peeper frogs but there are similar things here that brings back those same kind of precious moments.

I have been given a special blessing. I have been granted the privilege to live on the "old home place". It's the land my grandparents purchased, my parents lived here when I was born, and now my husband and I call it home. There are so many child hood memories here and your story brings them all rushing back. Thanks for sharing you heart with us.

We have peepers here sometimes.... but no Lightening bugs.... I have never seen one. Because of the drought we are haveing I havent heard a peeper in two years now.

Funny thing is youd think drought would kill the Frogs off completely but give enough rain or moisture for a couple of weeks straight and the air will be filled with their sound....

Anybody up for a game of freeze tag, hide-and-go-seek, baseball, etc.??? We use to catch the fireflies/lightning bugs and let them loose in the house. My sister would make rings out of their lights. I could never do that. I just had fun chasing them.

I'm with you...power went out last night and then I did everything wrong. Don't know if these chicks will survive it all. Stayed up half the night, thinking I had it all in hand, used a hot water bottle, etc., then after the power came back on was where I failed...forgot to turn the pad back on. They were at 80* this morning....

yep, I am ready.
I tried about three years ago to teach my grandkids how to play "sticks" and my participation in the game only lasted about 3 minutes.

Lightning bugs are easier I can sit I my rocker and wait for them to come to me. Anybody know where the lightning bugs went for 30+ years? I see them again and enjoy the experience and memories.

How about 'Red Rover, Red Rover, I Dare You Right Over', 'Mother, May I', Jacks, football, etc. Anyone ever hear of Mumbley Peg ? It is played with a knife or ice pick.

Lisa :)
