The Front Porch Swing

You've got me curious now - what's the story with Che? I know they get a little weird when by themselves - my Buff keeps trying to attract the rooster, she has friends in the brooder.
We found Che at the feed store as an adult. He was locked up in a tiny cage (which of course pulled at our heartstrings) and then we saw his weird little crippled leg. One of the workers there was making jokes about feeding him to the huge python the store keeps if he didn't sell. The toes were turned sideways and there was lots of scarring. He doesn't stand up straight like normal Indian Runners because of the injury. He's weird, in my opinion, because of how he reacts to the dogs and other chickens. He used to love hanging out with Sandy but she would play a little rough with him (he'd always end up covered in slobber with his feathers in disarray).

He didn't like Kimchi and Rosie, so he'd attack them with his bill, but it annoyed them, so they'd attack him. He actually has scarring on his bill from that. At one point, one of them had cut him on the back and I had to keep him in the garage until I knew he was healed up.

Around chickens, he's pretty normal until they get too close to the water bucket/pool. At that point, he sticks his bill under their wings and nibbles until they get annoyed enough to leave him alone. It always looks like he is searching for food in there, haha!

Can't be me...I don't sit long enough to care if I'm on a bucket seat or not. Usually I am just standing or leaning against the railing. I take a few sips of tea, munch on whatever someone has brought and then I'm off to do something! Most of the time you can catch me picking up something from one room and taking it to another room just to leave it there with no real place for it and then get something else in that room and take it around the house a bit. I do this a few times until I get busy doing something else that caught my attention. A bit ADD much??

I know thd feeling. In fact, I am right behind you!

Guys, tonight is count down to chicks night..no more turning and now just waiting. Should have chicks on the first day of spring!

Just a few but the very first hatched by a heating pad in a natural nest, as far as I know, so it will be a neat thing.

After these, I may sit another nest in April to see if I can get a higher hatch rate and better fertilized eggs. Will try to have those hatch on my B-day. I want to keep at this method until it yields a good hatch rate.

Have to try to get caught up there now also. Hope it all goes well. I want to try this.

Woot! I'm gonna try and get used to working full time, but on weekends, I want to start doing projects to keep myself involved in the flock. Those birdies are starting to forget me, haha!

My plan is to sketch out an incubator and build it. I've never built anything before that I can remember (I helped with the building of the coop, but my Dad was doing most of the work) and it's my turn.

I really want to make one I can use for years, so I want to start in it this upcoming week. Hopefully I can set it up with enough time to hatch 2 dozen Muscovy ducklings for my birthday! It's in August (and yes that is months away) but there will be a practice hatch or two before I try and hatch the eggs I want.

Can't wait! Now if only I could sleep! You've got work in the morning, Laura! Get a hold of yourself!

That's a tad different than how I get in trouble about cats...I get in trouble when I say how cruel it is to keep them in a house all their lives.
Same with dogs.

Speaking of dogs in the house all the time... A friend of mine's dog has cancer and it is eating the dirt out of flower pots and chewing on things like bricks. Does anybody know what this dog is after that it is trying to find?
