The Front Porch Swing

Quote: For what its worth.... the dust isnt from the bedding.... its from the rapidly growing feathers on the chicks.... the fuz has to come off first then the feather emerges in a sheath whcih gets picked and flaked off too as the feather grows out.... I know I tried raising up 40 Guinea Keets i n moms Garage..... Her garage will NEVER be the same again.....

Seriously, if anyone here ever has a desire to eat real Mexican food, order from the link I posted. They actually ship tamales nationwide. Loads of people leave the Rio Grande Valley and want a taste of home, so they had to start shipping them. If I ever leave, I'll be ordering them often, haha!

Quote: LOL Saying you like Mexican food is like saying you like American food. It depends on what influences have happened in the region. Like in TJ there are alot of Chinese people who settled there after the railroads were finished here... so you will see some of those ingredients incorporated.

But I have to say I love love love Tamales. When I moved to my house in the desert near the border there were several local restaurants that served up the real deal. Baja California is pretyy much the influence here.... Some Aztec too. But there was one Place that had been in business for a good 40 years in a building that had been built as a farm house 80 years ago.... Back then this was Basque country.... At christmas time they offered up sweet Tamales... OH MY GAWD were those good.... I had never had them before... With raisins and pineapple and cinimon....and cream cheese...

Speaking of food... Down memory lane.

There used to be several Basque communities in San Diego.... My first taste of lamb at a restaurant was at a place called Chateau Basque.... It was an hour drive from San Diego to get to it..... in 1975 Dinner there was 20 bucks... Served family style they had only two entrees some sort of lamb dish and some sort of beef dish.... Oh and some sort of fish dish.... LOL that would be three entrees Depending on the recipes of the day it could be rack of lamb, prime rib, and king crab....

They Served up family style.... Carpachio first as an appetizer, then salad Then soup and piles and piles of sourdough bread and butter.... All piled in Bowls and turrenes and plates. Then the Entree was served.... IN our case we had a group of about twelve people heading for the desert to celebrate the new year. There were about six people who ordered lamb and about three that ordered Porterhouses and three that ordered up King Crab. Each of us got a clean plate then Piles of crab were set on the table a big plate of steaks and Two HUGE racks of lamb came out. It was a scene out of Henry the 8th.

But my goodness that lamb was out of this world good.... There was nothing gone to waste except maybe a slice of bread or two discretely wrapped and tucked into a purse. I dont know how they did it....

After we ate then we were off to go celebrate New Years on an abandoned air field near El Centro. That party was truely memorable...

Deb - that meal sounds divine! I have just been speaking to DH about family style restaurants - not family restaurants... the kind you show up to and KNOW they will serve something great - the one or two t hings on the menu for the evening. Pick A or B - as long as there is some left of either.

I just love that idea as the chef!

And... I will ask again... what happened (or is going on) with Bee's chicks?

Two more days, Sarah...first day of spring is when they are due to hatch. We shall see if they actually hatch then or the next day. Three chicks made it to this time of the incubation so I'm hoping they all make it out into the world okay. I'll do pics and video if I can figure out how to upload my videos to my PC.

Woke up this morning to two little peepers in the incubator and at least 3 more pipping

They are just mutt chicks but adorable. I will try to get pictures later today.

We had friends come over yesterday for corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, and a new recipe I tried for an Irish apple cake. Very easy and my husband won't stay out of it. I topped it with a little whipped cream flavored with Irish Cream Whiskey. Yum. I'll have to bake another one for everyone on the porch..

Today I am taking it easy. We have had dinner guest 3 times this week. I guess everyone needs to get out after this winter. We should have a high of 58 today. That means the motorcycles will be out in Ohio. I need to be out in the barn and coop cleaning up the winter debris...but it is still mud season. We are supposed to have good weather all week so it is time to start. The seeds I started indoors are starting to sprout and spring fever is setting in.

Got a rooster I am going to have to cull soon. He is one I hatched last fall and the competition crowing with my original roo is driving me crazy. Good thing we don't have close neighbors.

Hope everyone has a good week.

How far do you live from me? Louisiana. I had leftovers for supper. hum.

Good luck, perchie! and have a great day

Blooie, try planting the blueberries into a bag of peat moss. slash the bag so it can drain, then bury it. Soak it really well with water, you want to make sure it is wet completely through. Plant the blueberry bush into the bag. Now, this was recommended to me by a local master gardener and I haven't had a chance to try it, but more than one person have recommended it to me.

That is genius!!!!! Gonna try it. Thanks
