The Front Porch Swing

Framing is done, so tomorrow morning we raise the walls! Woot woot!! Our son will be able to help us get that done. Then comes the exterior sheathing, installation of the wiring with a light socket, switch, and outlet, insulation, interior sheathing, ventilation, doors and window, nest boxes, roosts, painting, setting up the run - oh PHOOEY!! When I started this post I felt like we were finishing up.....until I put it all down I didn't realize that we've barely started!

Quick - I need a banana bread or coconut cake fix!!

I made lemon flavored butter cookies today, Blooie...nothing too special, but they do go fantastically with tea!
Congrats on the progress; loved the pictures with the grand kids helping

A lemon butter cookie sounds perrr-fect! Thank you! Evan had a great time helping Grampa. Ken and our son Kenny really try hard to get him involved in the "guy" stuff. With his mom and dad split up (Dad lives 700 miles away) and his best buddy, big brother Austin, gone he really thrives on the male attention, too!

I think we're gonna let Evan and Katie do the painting, but Ken and I have picked the paints. Not sure what kind of job we'll end up with, but the chickens won't care! I did talk Katie out of painting it "pale princess pink" and putting turrets on top the way she drew up and colored her plan for the coop. Evan wanted to paint it in blue, red, yellow, and green blocks to make it look like it was made out of Legos. Actually I kinda liked the Lego idea, but Ken patiently pointed out that using Evan's idea wouldn't be fair to Katie unless we went with the turrets from her's. Hmmm, come to think of it wouldn't turrets on top make a great passive ventilation system?

So how's everyone on the porch? Get lots done today, ladies? Any early hatchers from Bee's hive? (teehee, I made that up!) Enquiring minds......

You KNOW chicken math, you're going to build another coop before long.

Ah, Regin....stick out your tongue...now bite down hard! Two coops? Um, nope.

I got afflicted with Chicken Math early on. Wanted 10 chicks....but the hatchery only took orders of 15 or more. So I ordered 20. Lost 6 so I ended up with 14. Couldn't have that, so bought 2 more Orpingtons and 2 more Red Stars to partially replace the ones I lost. Ken decided he wanted to see what Copper Maran and Speckled Sussex chicks looked like - so being a dutiful, obedient wife I bought two of each. So now I have - in his former office - a huge brooder box containing 22 chicks ranging in age from 4 weeks to almost 2 weeks.
