The Front Porch Swing

Update on my little cutie, Aliza Grace...she has been jaundiced and they thought they had it under control, she had spent some time under the UV lights but they called about her bloodwork done today and she had to go back to the hospital for more light therapy for a bilirubin level at 18. Her mom is having a hard time with this and also with the fact that Aliza is not getting enough from her breast feeding right now and they have had to supplement her feedings. She's losing weight and having constipation, etc.

I know this little girl is in the hand of God and I don't worry one bit, but if you all could say a prayer for these young parents, I'd appreciate it. They are sort of nervous nellies anyway, so add an orange, little Oompah Loompah baby to the mix and it's really causing them strain.

Prayers being sent! My youngest was born at 34 weeks. She was really bruised from presenting face first, and then having to have an emergency C-section.... She had to stay in the NICU for a week. If my 4 lb 13 oz peanut could do fine, so will theirs! Here is my glo-worm with her bruised and swollen face! I felt so bad..... would you all like to hear her story?

HI! Lots of great advice here soooo how about a little story?
Once upon a time I had a lot of chickens I really liked and there was this big mean old owl that kept coming an getting them. He came and sat on the pole that had the night light on it. He sat up on top above the light...he could see them, they couldn't see him.
So we set a trap and WOW we caught that big old booger the first night. He got caught by the toes but somehow he managed to damage a wing too.
Husband got him down from the trap......I felt so bad for him, [the owl] I picked him up in my arms with his face away from me and his big old back against me. FREAKED

me out when he just swiveled his head around looked me in the eye!!! I was in love!!!

I put him in a cage and he was just awsome!
Well...hubby came along in a few days or so and sees the owl in the cage. ????? What the heck?
He asks " is that the darn owl that was eating your chickens?" answer, "yes"
He asks "are you feeding him? "
Of course he eats out of my hand.
He asks WHAT are you feeding him?
OOOPS! I answer, "I buy him chicken at the store."

Do you see anything wrong with this picture???

I didn't.
Bahahahaha I see soooooo many things wrong with it. Can't stop laughing. You do know it's illegal to have a wild creature in your home. They will ticket you. At least it is in Louisiana. I worked at the Parish District Attorney's office. Specialized in wildlife and fisheries tickets.

I would love to hear her story. I might not respond right away because in a few minutes I'm off to a town council meeting, but I hope it's ready for me to read when I get home. She's soooo cute!!

Um, are you gonna duck first this time, Bee? Or at least sit down and pull your toes up out of the way!! Prayers for you, Aliza Grace, and her worried family.

Lindz do you hear any internal noises when she breathes? Is her breathing shallow? Where are her wounds?

Usually all you can do when a hen has internal injuries is to wait....just wait. If she does not improve in a couple of days or seems to be suffering, laboring to breathe, unable to stand~I'd cull. Yes, there is always the chance she could be nursed back to health and many on these forums prove that, but I can only tell you what I would do...and I don't believe in making an animal suffer so I can prove a point on how compassionate or how good a nurse to animals that I am. Suffering is suffering, no matter if it's in a nice, warm house wrapped in a blankie or out on the roost.

Just watch that hen...I can't hear any wheezing, rasping or gurgling when she breathes but she may be filling up with blood in her abdomen which can compress her lungs and slowly smother her. If her breathing becomes more labored, if she gapes her mouth with each breath...I'd kill her.

I am not hearing anything when she breathes, but she is keeping her mouth open. She stands up, but her gait is wobbly. She does seem a little more alert than when I first brought her in. Here is another video that shows where her wounds are... I had already put Nustock on them though. They really look alot like road-rash. I'm sorry to ask for help here, but I would rather have your all's opinions rather than creating a thread and having everyone tell me to use a bunch of medications and stuff on her. I will probably give her until tomorrow and see if she improves. If not, I'll have to go ahead and cull. Its a shame because she is just old enough to start laying, but we haven't gotten an egg from her yet.

QUICK, SonRise....hide behind me! Nope, Linda, I haven't SEEN her all day. I couldn't POSSIBLY tell you where she is right now. Of course I'll let her know the authorities are looking for her. You're welcome.

Okay, SonRise, she's looking at Lindz place now. You can come out.

I missed how this bird got injured? Dog or hawk?

Yes, me too, I figure if I can keep it all mowed I'll be doing good. I learned in my old age to buy weed/grass killer and I spray around everything that I can't get close enough to with the riding mower. Then I just ZIP around and it only take about 2 to 3 days!!!!!

Wish I had a "bagger" like Carolyn, she mows even in the winter months and gathers the grass clippings for the chickens to peck through and for the soft nests.
Pretty smart cookie..she is.

I don't have one of those, but I have seen a device that you push like a manual lawnmower with a bag attached. $79 Kotalas.com Way in the back of the garden section. It rakes your leaves and grass clippings. That's more my budget. Free shipping

Willow, here is the tree today, just now.

The greatest thing about it is that it pleases many of the senses, it smells divine, looks awsome and also has a very pleasant "HUM" do to all the millions of bees that are enjoying it.
You sure can't miss it.

This was last week at my house in La. Now their falling and leaves are coming in. Never last long enough. We don't have 1 bulb planted. No flowers except for the tree. The things I planted last fall. Figs and Blackberries all died. Hum

That is one very beautiful tree! Some trees just have that shape that is pleasing to the eye and you immediately notice their beauty when you drive by, whether they are in bloom or not...that's one of those trees! Some trees just make my heart warm to see them and I always loved this verse....can't you just picture this?

For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12
