The Front Porch Swing

That's it Linda......IF you can't do it perfectly......then it doesn't get done......

That's a great excuse, thanks.

OOOPS got to chime in here...If you don't cover that with a tarp then you will allow a lot of unwanted wild birds to come in and I mean the big type...hawks and such.
I use cow panel pens for the dogs and put some on the top and bottom both.
Got to cover it with small chicken wire....it makes a real good strong top though.

Yeah, thanks, I plan to wrap to whole thing in small 1" wire. Fort Knox it.

Ok...whats a Balut??? [Got a feeling I'm not gona like this!]

Question.....I am overrun with mice and until today had no cats, do you think it is possible to take these kittens when eating on there own, to capture them and tame them and then give them residence in the chicken house and tightly enclosed yard and make them grow up with the chickens and keep the mice out??
Give them litter box but I am sure the chickens would LOVE that! Don't want to think of my breakfast eggs as having been partially made from cat poo....
I have to figure a way to get these darn mice!!!!! The chickens catch and kill them if they can, but these mice are fast!

The house is insulated but the mice have gotten into the insulation behind the walls, my husband says tear the whole thing down, I HATE that idea!
Any ideas? Think this would work. Kinda like a dog in there only a kitty. Hey while we are on the subject of poop, don't the chickens eat the dog poo????
Sorry if I gagged you all

JustOneBite...it's a miracle and will take care of your mice quickly. They will crawl out of the buildings and die there. My dogs, cat or chickens never try to eat them....they usually won't eat a rodent that is already dead. You can put it in a part of the building they don't have access to but the mice will find them.

A balut or balot is a developing duck embryo that is boiled alive and eaten in the shell. It is commonly sold as streetfood in the Philippines.

Good questions on kittens. I am wanting to get kittens for our place. We have rats. Not sure how to train the kittens to stay around the barn area. I don't think you need a litter box outside. :)

Lisa :)

Only feed them in that area and they will hang around that area the most.

Ah, jeepers! Just when my mood was improving by the minute and I was thinking the chicken run dilemma was solved, I read back a few post and spotted one little thing I missed earlier. And it had to be about the one thing that has been freaking me out ever since we decided to get chickens - sticking my hands in a nest and finding a reptile instead of an egg! I thought 1/2 inch wire would do it - I may have to cover my entire run in window screen now.

Moth balls will deter snakes from the area....I had a black snake snack on some chicks but never again when I started using moth balls around the coops.
Tarps are great but they don't last where I live. I bet you in the past year I have gone through a dozen of them! That runs into money! Do yourself a favor and get a good tarp from somewhere and not the kind sold in places like WalMart. The sun just bakes them and before you know it they are thread-bare PLUS the wind whipping them around wears them out in no time. Put the two together and those tarps are a joke! There is an Amish guy here that has a sign up that he makes "custom tarps". I am going to have to pay him a visit.

Even a cheap tarp will last longer if they are strapped down tightly to some supportive structure and cannot flap in the wind. My current tarp has been on the coop for 2 1/2 yrs now and still going strong but I will be changing over to clear tarps.

A tarp that will last for the duration of your coop is the canvas tarps...they are a great investment.

Snakes hate the smell of moth balls. We put it out under porches and such a couple times of year. Haven't seen one since the day we moved the Mobile home in. Six foot rattler. The plumber who was hooking everything up calmly walks to his truck and gets his pistol and kills it. Aimee immediately went to the store and bought 3 boxes of them. Works great. I read somewhere to pour some into a knee high hose and hang it outside the coop. I'm gonna.
