The Front Porch Swing

Elder care can be tough, especially, as Bee intuits, they like hospitals and that sort of attention maybe a little too much. Doctors can never properly figure out my mother's maladies because of her tendency to exaggerate.

Dr. "When did you begin vomiting?"
Mum: "Yesterday after breakfast."
Dr. "How often have you vomited?"
Mum: "Oh I'd say every fifteen minutes or so."
Doctor leaves in a panic.
Me: "Mum are you aware you just told that nice man you've vomited over a hundred times?"
Mum, indignantly: "Well it certainly felt like it!"

Ohhh my mom is right the opposite! lol I have to talk, beg and threaten to get her to a doctor's appointment. It takes me days to work up to getting her to an approintment - manipulation on my part! LOL Then if she does happen to not be feeling well... The doctor will say, "How are you feeling today?" Mom says, "Aww pretty good." I'm like, "Moooom, no you're not!" LOL. It has got to the trip there involves a discussion about, "Mom don't you tell him you are feeling fine, tell him what's wrong with you." lol

Ugh. One of my ex-husbands was like that. Weaseled out of any activity I wanted to do with some physical complaint. Then would force me to go to the check-ups with him. Then would tell the doctor he felt, "Perfect. Never better!" when the doctor asked.

I thought he was just "forgetful," or trying to impress the doctor. So I started taking notes. With dates. Then I'd read the notes aloud at the appointments.

Later my head stopped spinning and I realized the guy was just another liar, so ...

Oh I can identify with the "bag-o-meds" too!

Me: "What's this little yellow pill?"
Mum: "That's my morning pill."
Me: "But whats in it?"
Mum: "No idea."
Me: "We'll what's it FOR then???"
Mum: "It's for taking in the morning!"

I took the "bag-o-meds" to a very nice helpful pharmacist who explained every one to me then put them in orderly day by day boxes.

I took over my mom's care when my dad passed away. Oh I miss that man!!!

My mom doesn't know much about the meds she takes. I put them all in the daily dispenser and she takes them three times a day. From the dispenser I put them in her little cup and occassionally she will pick one out and say, "What is this? When did I start taking this?" I tell her, "A long time ago." ..."Are you sure?..."Yes I'm sure" ..."Just take it, if I haven't killed you yet I don't think I'm going to!" hahahaha

Around here they always request that you bring in all the medicine. I don't do it. I take a list instead. And if I forget the list I can tell them what she takes but maybe not the miligrams.

My mom just really doesn't like to complain. I remind her often to TELL ME when she's not feeling good.

I think there's a lot of people in my mom's generation who were just brought up to revere doctors and take whatever they were prescribed, no questions asked. They didn't think they needed to know the ingredients in meds or the consequences of treatments because that was for the doctor to know and they were just to follow orders. So she gets mad at me if I question her need for this drug or this procedure. I don't know quite how to put it. It's as if she doesn't OWN her health; its somebody else's responsibility.

O goodness, my Dad was the same way when it comes to going to the doctor. We would tell him, 'Dad this is serious. No jokes. Tell the doctor what is going on'. It doesn't work. We kids are sitting there with an incredulous look on our face while Dad tells one of his 'stories' with a deadpanned face. I really think it was that generation. I would do anything to have him back!

Bee, I take a list in with me of all my medications, what I can and can't have, and ALL my surgeries. It really doesn't do any good because they still don't look at it!

Quote: She quit cold turkey two years ago... Occasionally she has Decaf. I get her a Teeny eight ounce Americana ans she drinks half.

Quote: LOL.... Love ambiguous responses.... I have seen mom do that.... And when she goes in with grandma for her visits mom snags some "quality time" with the doc as well....

Quote: The docs require bringing in the meds here. I think they just compare them with what ever is on the chart. Just to make sure someone isnt taking an old med or something that doesnt belong or is absent. At least i hope so. Mom carries hers in a Tackle box.

Quote: So far each of mine can quote you what it is what its for and when they are supposed to take it. Grandma takes About three or four meds and a bunch of different supplements... Occuvite, one a day, I have finally talked her into Arthritis strenght Tylenol. Then blood pressure meds, something for leg cramps, The leg cramps shes had all her life.

Mom.... Shes on Panic meds Blood pressure meds Migraine meds, over active bladder meds. She was on Cholesterol meds but they made her fall down.... If she reads about a medication she asks to be put on it....

Quote: I cant quit I get major migraines.... If I dont drink coffee a single soda will stave it off though.

Quote: Thats me. I stopped trusting docs when I started menopause.

Hey porch friends, I'm a chicken mama
My very first ever chicken hatched at 8:20 am. 2 more are out and at least 3 more are zipping. I have 12 total.
We are live streaming it to my daughter 5th grade class room and my aunts day care.

Yeah I see that a little bit out of mom. Me, I question everything. She says I think I'm a doctor. LOL Usually if I go to the doctor I already know what's wrong with me and I know what I want for it, I just need the prescription for it. LOL
