The Front Porch Swing

Good mornin' everybody. I am so excited. The Amish guys are coming to build my coop today. I hope I can get pictures to load. I will have to finish out the interior so it will be a little while before my birds can move into their new home. I really need the space. I am up to 30 birds now. (but half of them are babies, so they don't count, right.)

I haven't boiled an egg in at least 25 years. Worked for a diner where one day a week the special was an egg salad sandwich and a cup of soup. We were always busy, but that day was always a zoo! We'd do 4 - 6 dozen eggs at a time. Used muffin tins and baked them at 325 for 25 minutes. I remember my first day there - all I could think of was that Ma was gonna come uncorked when I told her how Ida cooked the eggs....until I peeled my first one. Shell slid right off, no white clinging to it, yolks beautiful bright yellow, and no additional steam in the kitchen from boiling that many. I've never boiled an egg since.
Interesting! Never heard of "hard baked eggs". More to add to the experiment. More costly though, running the oven for 25 minutes, unless something else is in there anyway. Makes sense for 4-6 dozen though, that would be a LOT of boiling water.

Moving on, a tree fell down on our fence and completely bent it and separated the sections. We've been incredibly lucky because that tree has dropped limbs before and every time, it misses the chicks' grow out coop. Well, the entire dang thing finally fell yesterday (we were having some crazy strong wind yesterday) and now I have to lock up that area.

The tree is on our neighbor's property and it is technically their responsibility, but Dad won't ask them to remove it. I don't understand why, considering we don't really have any issues with them. They would understand and could probably get it done in a few hours.

Part of me just wants to go over, ask that they remove the tree or, to avoid having to pay for the new fencing, removing the tree and repairing any other property damage to the chick coop (there are some dents from limbs falling on the metal roof), they can give us a portion if their unused land. It's just sitting there. We could just extend our fence a bit and could remove the crap that keeps growing into our yard (vines, weeds, etc) and they would hardly notice.
I see no reason they should give you their property whether they use it or not. Sell maybe, but then the whole survey and land record changes would be expensive. That said, if you are on good terms with them, I expect they would let you mow the vines and weeds far enough from the fence to keep them out of your property.
Second, and I was VERY surprised to read this just last week, if your neighbor's tree damages your property, it is YOUR insurance that pays. I REALLY don't understand this one. If their CAR ran into your house, THEIR insurance would pay. Why is it not THEIR insurance that has to pay if the tree does the damage??? Oh, and any fruit that falls on your property is THEIRS, not YOURS. The tree itself would be as well so you can't just cut up the part that is on your property for fire wood. But you do get the leaves, like it or not. In any case, a decent neighbor would take care of any damage their tree caused, especially if the tree was known to be weak and they just hadn't dealt with it like they should.

Saw a coyote run off with one of my chickens today. I'd let them out to free range.

Raccoon traps were empty this morning.

I really want more fencing.
Geez. I've been lucky so far. I've not seen coyotes (yes they are in Vermont) and only 1 fox 2 years ago. I know I'm taking chances letting the girls out unattended. Knocking on wood 'cause I don't have time to coyote proof the fields with hotwire. Plus it would be EXPENSIVE!

EASTER BUNNIES!!!!

Dogs found these for me. Not sure which is the Easter bunny so brought them both home.
Too cute!

I'm making a big Thai red curry soup right now. Couple cans of coconut milk, couple quarts of the broth from the bird ... then I'll add turkey breast, maybe some rice. I'll freeze some for later, probably.

I really like soup.
Sounds like you are in one of your better health periods!

Just got in from our week in Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba and it was great ! Weather was beautiful (mid 80's to low 90's) - sunny and the beach was something right out of a magazine ! The resort was fantastic and great fun was had by all ! We did a day excursion to a nearby town/village called Caibarien... Even got to see lots of chickens while there - the place is overrun with Cubalaya's... They are a gorgeous breed

Had to check your location knowing that no US citizen can vacation in Cuba. So stop it with the description of how lovely it is!

MAYBE some day the ****s in D.C will figure out that Cuba ceased to be a threat to the USA when the Soviet Union fell and the embargo isn't doing anything useful. Any pictures of their Cubalayas? I'd be interested to know how they compare to the ones we have here. And yes, the males are astoundingly beautiful, no roos at my place though. These are my Cubalaya girls from Ideal

Fae, the bottom one, has laid a couple of 50g eggs this spring. Pretty darned big for a little chicken! Same size egg as my Faverolles and Partridge Chantecler lay - ALMOST USDA medium.

Welcome home! We missed ya! Nah, nuthing important. Leslie discovered the cure for the common cold, Bee finally cracked the genetic code for my OCD, and Deb solved the mystery of how to get men to Mars and and back without them aging on the trip. (We're still arguing the merits of making it a round trip.) Other than that, been just the same old, same old!

Yayy....lots of pictures. And whatever you do, keep those Amish guys happy - I caught one episode of Amish Mafia and it scared the peewadding outta me! And if babies don't count, somebody send me some hatching eggs!

Happy anniversary, Lisa! Do something special and FUN today!

Happy Anniversary TexasLisa & Hubby!!!!! I wish you that many more, well unless we get lucky and the Lord raptures us on outta here. I hope you two have a great day! :)

@WBF... That's right, you're in Canada! Us neighbors to the south of you aren't allowed to go to Cuba (unless you are a star like Byonce, aka "that Bouncy chick"). I think that is getting a little rediculous.

I had hoped that everyone had realized that what I said was not to be taken seriously. I'm not out to steal someone's land or to force them to give it to me. I was just frustrated and wanted to not feel that way for a little while. Our fence is totally screwed up now and it is expensive hurricane-proof fencing we'll have to replace.

A GOOD neighbor would prevent this from happening in the first place. We told them about this tree ages ago and they did nothing. When one of our super sturdy, healthy ebony trees fell on our neighbors fence, we called them right away, let them know, apologized, and fixed the fence quickly.

The people who own land behind us just don't want to get along with anybody, according to her son (our tree fell in his fence and he was great about it). That was why I was ranting about it.

We just cut up the dang tree and put portions of it in our firewood pile. We weren't going to wait for a response only for that woman to come over and ask us to pay her sons to remove it. Her son told us it was okay, anyhow. That woman is one sandwich short of a picnic, I swear.
