The Front Porch Swing

100 degrees to day and they are saying hotter tomorrow.

There were areas in San Diego county that got down to 4-5 percent humidity and the winds kicked in.

it's 39F!(@ 1 a.m.) here and we still have the wood fire going! high suppose to be in the 40s send me some heat pleeease......

I wasn't able to post at all today! I was so busy baking sample cakes for a lady who wants to purchase some baked goods from me and then Tony wouldn't go to the corner store and get me some heavy cream, so I had to make a subpar buttercream frosting. It was unsatisfying and I can only hope it didn't lose me a potential sale. I really put on the charm, though, and offered fresh strawberry filling for the cakes and said that a delicious and light lemon cake would really pep up a party.

Oh yeah, I was totally trying to sell my wares. :D

We'll see what happens. In the meantime, I'm now painting two eggs for Mama's teacher friend and her mother. Painting tiny warblers on an egg is hard work, but it left me feeling very satisfied.

Now, what should I paint on her mother's egg? I know nothing about the woman. Part of me wants to do a lovely sunset, but I'm not sure yet. With an egg for a canvas, there really is no end and no beginning. It's kinda hard to paint an entire picture like that.

I feel like dancing! Today has just been a very good, productive day. Wish I could have been outside working, but working inside gave me time to really sing with my music, which was so nice. I haven't much time to sing anymore. :)

I woke up to rain this morning! It has not rained here for a month, and the last rain was just enough to make the grass sadder. Pastures here were showing the effects of no rain. We have already had several days of 90º+ days. I am not looking forward to this summer.... :(

We've needed a fire the last 2 nights. Of course it would choose to be cold as I moved the chicks outside 2 days ago. They spent the first night on the ground instead of sleeping in the raised area that was nicely lined with fresh shavings. Last night, they wised up, and after about 1/2 hour of squabbling, they settled their sleeping arrangements. I'm sure they were warm enough, because they make a solid carpet of feathers by the time they're settled.

It has rained here for the last 2-3 days. Not all day everyday, but rain nonetheless. It was 85 here on Mon and Tues. Today's high is to be 58-62 with a low of 40 tonight!! Crazy weather! They are saying this could be a El Nina (I think that is what it is called) year. Could be the hottest summer on record!! Let's pray they are wrong! They are saying there is a 70% chance. I don't do well in sweltering heat!! I remember the year my daughter was married (99). It was end of July and it was soooo hot and dry. The grass was all brown and ugly! I think that was a El Nina year also. I don't want that again! But I guess we will take what we get!

I keep telling DH we need to get some rain barrels set up, since we are having all this rain, then we will have water for the garden. Lots of water coming off the roof!! About the time he gets them, it will quit raining!

We are keeping the house shut up today. We are trying not to light a fire!! I will pile the blankets on before I build a fire in the middle of May!!!

Mon and Tues nights we were burning up all night (upper 60's-low 70's) We even set the fan in the window to cool us off! Today is cool (56) and rainy. Tonight it is to be 40! The rain is about to stop though, so it may warm up to the low 60's.

Laura! I just checked out your painted eggs! You do a really great job! I love to paint, but I'm not sure I could paint on a small egg like that. Good Job!

never mind the PILE of bermuda all around her feeder.... LOL.

The flies have been messin with her eyes so I wrangled on her fly mask. Going to check it this weekend to see if she needs her eye cream. Clears up with one or two applications.

I had to capture a trash can and fasten it to a post....

Isn't that the truth!! Ours ignore the hay on the ground too!

Valentine has problems with flies and ticks. I have to keep up with the Equi-Spot or he will rub his tail and mane raw in about two seconds. We never had that problem in Wisconsin, or even the first couple years here in Virginia. Crazy high maintenance horse! My husband's family has always had mixed breed horses that cost very little. You think any of them have ever needed to be pampered or taken a lame step? Never. Now Valentine, with his pedigree and all, can look at a rock and go lame without even stepping on it! I have had trouble with him from the start, which is probably why I never really got into showing. He would turn up lame. Sometimes a rib out of place. Sometimes an abcess. He could trick the vet lame one second, sound the other. I remember in lessons if I had to get after him for something he would suddenly act like he was limping. We had a block and X-rays done to find he had a chip in his coffin bone. So on again off again lameness. He hasn't been worked hard since. He now serves as a lawn mower for about 40 acres. That said, there was a time when he was my everything. Definitely kept me out of trouble when I was a teenager and taught me all those little lessons that only an animal can do. He taught me work ethic. So, lame or sound, I wouldn't trade him for the world.
