Hi All!!!!

I am back online though I must admit that my long separation has made me less of an addict, and that is WONDERFUL!!!!

We have arrived at our new house on May 2, and have been working hard. We now have 3 toilets (nice with 8 people here), and one shower. When we first moved in there was one bath, and then we promptly got the runs with 3 kids under 5... Ugh, that was tiring!

Getting set up, though. Boxes still being located and surprises in them (that is ours?), and then a good surprise, we somehow acquired an amazing drill during the move. (Hey, where did you buy a new drill? No, this was on the shelf and I have been using it for 3 days. I thought XXX gave it to you. Hmmm... Wonder where it came from?)

And of course, the house isn't finished (that may take a decade), but the chicken coop has been fixed up a bit, and a fence has been built, and we now have one beautiful Buff Orpington rooster (about 6 mo) that someone needed to re-home because he was too noisy, and 6 barred rock hens! They look beautiful and I hope to have some chicks some day!



This is the old chicken coop. Hasn't been used in over 20 years, and not sure how much it was used then. No nest boxes (still need to build some), took out windows and replaced them with 1/2" hardware cloth (someone had been using them for target practice), moved the doors from the back (onto swamp land) to the front (higher by about 2', and drier). Need to board up a door more thoroughly, and eventually replace the roof, which is currently a very old cedar shake roof with lots of moss growing on it.



I'm not used to the weather here yet. Went to get some shavings from the neighbour with a mill, and they were completely soaked... waiting for a sunny day to dry them out (it's been rainy for 3 days since!)


Enjoying the new run! 100' of fence so it's big!


Oh... and we are having our first adventure with fleas!!! In Edmonton, they were rare. Here our poor 13yo dog hs been infested with them. I have never seen so many. Do chickens get fleas?

Freedom Mutt update: the FMs are feathered out enough that their broody lets them sleep by themselves. Their broody had chosen a spot for them under the roosts, in what used to be the most popular section of roost, at top end, far side. The 100+ adult birds in the coop are now not roosting in their favorite spot so the chicks don't wake up covered in poo. Just another little FM Miracle.

Meanwhile, in the breeding coop: The adult Delawares are pouting because they have to share space with their own chicks and the foster hens. There are 5 hens and 25 chicks of various ages in with the Delaware trio now. The Delaware hens are so put out by this that they have been laying their eggs out in the run, in the tall grass. We found one small clutch yesterday ... 4 eggs by nightfall ... and this morning we found a clutch with 10 eggs. The stinkers.

I think I have a new broody I can stick those eggs under ...

Also, one of the 2-week Delaware chicks got out of the run yesterday evening and was all distraught. Peep! Peep! The Freedom Mutts, snuggled together in their corner inside their coop, were trying to comfort the little lost chick, peeping to it, so the chick was trying to snuggle with them through the hardware cloth. This made the loose chick slightly easier to catch ... there are external nesting boxes in that corner, too, so the little chick was under those ... it's an awkward reach and when chicks go under the long row of nesting boxes and run up and down the row ... about 30' of boxes ... they can be super tough to catch!

Oh, yeah. Tam lived on Dramamine when we were traveling from one of the country to the other in the Navy. I've since found Meclazine, which works better and faster with less drowsiness, so I use that for the nausea that comes with vertigo. They did the Epley maneuver when I first got it, and then prescribed the Meclazine. That's what I'll be taking with me on the cruise, although I don't anticipate any difficulties. But I'm sure Tam will...so I'll be asking the doctor if it's okay if she takes it if needed. I'm sure he'll say it's fine - he knows our family inside out....Ha I made a funny!

Meclazine is generic Dramamine. I've been buying it for years. I use to take 2 a day. Don't need it much anymore.

Think I fell off my bucket again laughing! Prayers to those in need, welcome newcomers and ill try a slice of pie and I brought fresh watermelon but here its all seeded so spit them in the bucket so I can plant them later on lol. Out with my chicken buddy today got the frames for my coop done and after dark we will haul it over the balcony since we cant get it through doors and 3 stories. Told her about the inquibator I made out of a broken washtub and she is going to give me a hen in trade for one of my roos now that its been determined I got two roos on the roof! Sure hope for some hens out of my 14 chicks. Once I get a few eggs gonna try my washibator again. So thats my new word for the porch vocabulary contest lol. If my mil only knew I got a rabbit in my bedroom and soon chicks 7n my livingroom well she can just complain.
fil worked with the USA government when Wheelus Airbase was operational so he is use to foriegn ideas but momma has only 3 yrs of schooling and is I think jelous of my abilities. No one else has issues and most tell me im one of them in most respects but without hubby I got the mans work too. I kinda shove it in their face when they dont help me. Great day and tomorrow busy will assemble the coop and might need more mesh but im also going to get my teeth from the dentist too lol. So much to do but I try to bring ideas slowly. The youth accept it easily.

Ivemectin. Buy through Amazon or wherever Just put a few drops per lb for dogs 2 I think. Add a few drops to chicken to keep off mites and fleas.

Edited to add: On another note, I got my incubator up and running. Just waiting for eggs. Coming tomorrow. I know to let sit for 24 hours after shipping but do I lay them flat or in the egg carton big end up?

Yup. Here I was all set to gently disagree with you but I looked it up - you're absolutely right! That's so surprising and interesting that my neurologist would specifically prescribe Meclazine over Dramamine for me, and that our GP would continue with that prescription. I told my neurologist that I was taking Dramamine at first when the vertigo was causing such "dickness" but he said specifically that the Meclazine 35 mg would be his recommendation. The only difference that I've been able to find is that Dramamine comes in lots of formulas and supposedly Meclazine is the "non-drowsy" formula. It could be made of chicken feed for all my tummy cares when I want fast relief of that doggone nausea, so I think the speed of my relief is most likely psychological - it seems to work faster therefore it must be faster!

If I get it prescribed, I get it for free since I met my annual deductible with the last stenting procedure....I like that! Teehee

Don't think I'll mention this to Tam...if she thinks she's getting a stronger med with less drowsiness then maybe she'll have the same psychological benefits that I get, along with the physical ones! Oh, I am evil and must be destroyed. Stupid question then...at first I didn't think I'd even need it, although I knew Tam probably would. With a history of vertigo (basically resolved since the Epley maneuver but still popping up once in rare while) is seasickness something I even need to think about? I wasn't worried about it, but all this talk has made me start second guessing. I've never been on a cruise before and a couple of our planned excursions are on smaller boats - whale watching and such. What do you guys think?
