The Front Porch Swing

OOPs sorry Blooie, sometimes my thoughts just spill out without going through my filter.

Just keep that filter put away! Sometimes the funniest things are the ones that sneak right past! Love it!

I just today asked my vet if I could use something like revolution on chickens and she said 1, it wouldn't get lice that feed off dead skin, just mites that feed off blood, and 2, you really shouldn't then eat those eggs. I'm still tempted to use it on older non laying hens, who seem to be more vulnerable to lice. What do you think?

Yeah, any treatment like that, you can't eat the eggs for a week or so. Bee doesn't use it. I think all she does is dust them in wood ash in their dust baths. Mites. I don't know about fleas and chickens.

I need a recipe for pickled eggs using beet juice, vinegar sugsr and pickling spices. Mike has a craving for pickled eggs.

Here is one I used to make for our local pub. The guys loved them.
Pickled Eggs

1 16 oz, can sliced beets with juice
2 tbs sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pickling spice
1 large onion sliced in rings
12 hard boiled eggs, peeled.

In a enamel or stainless steel sauce pan combine the 1st 5 ingredients
Bring to a boil and simmer 5 minutes.
In a glass jar big enough to hold 12 eggs alternate layers of eggs, beets, and onion rings until all are used. Pour the heated liquid into the jar making sure all layers are covered.
Refrigerate 24 hours before serving. They should keep for 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
I hope this helps.

Pyrethrin or Sulfur Dust(natural, cheaper, easier to find, very effective on mites and lice)...try either of those before using the Ivermectin...even my dog knows that stuff is bad news.

I'm back from vacation/fishing trip, it was lovely, lovely and more lovely...the weather, the views, the time was just wonderful. God blessed us all through the trip, the house we rented was great and had huge windows facing the most beautiful view....could see millions of stars from the hot tub each night. We caught a few trout~ not as many as we would have liked but we didn't really care....it was a blessed time. God is so very good to us!

The best part? I got to hold, feed, bathe, rock and otherwise love on the grandchild for 4 days! Bliss!

When I got back I found the broody had abandoned her nest....not sure if the chicks died before she left the nest or after but she's up there trying to sit on the fresh eggs in the nest so I'm thinking the chicks died/didn't hatch and she just got off the nest and left them. Some of the eggs were rotten...bad!

The little duck changed from a peeper to a quacker while we were gone and is trying to fledge out...she's big! In just four days the place can change so very much.

I missed you all and hope everyone is well on the Front Porch!

Oh that's sounds just perfect, and you sure deserved every minute of it! I'll bet she's getting so big! We missed you - glad you are back. As far as missing anything exciting...I don't think so - well, we had a tornado a couple of blocks down, and Ken found an "egg". That's about it from Oleo Acres! Everyone else can fill you in on their excitement. Welcome home.

Hello from Southwest Missouri! I love love this idea! I brought along some fresh gooseberry pie and just in case someone does not like that...yummy apple pie too (gooseberries are an acquired taste) A steaming cup of coffee sounds real good as we sit out here on the porch and enjoy the morning breeze. I have been enjoying watching my pretty girls chase around the bugs this morning, they are so silly!

and to the front porch! Sounds yummy!! Never tried gooseberry pie, so I will try a small piece of each, please.

We will set here and watch our flocks together.
