The Front Porch Swing

Hey! You know how I was asking about how to make a brooder? Well I asked the lady I was getting my chicks from where to find a broody hen and it turns out that she has lots, and she will sell them, and 3 is still probably cheaper than the cost of building a brooder! Not only that, but she started her whole business using broodies instead of brooders - because the chicks are so much healthier and it's easier so she said she would be thrilled to be a mentor too! YIPPEE!!!

So I'm going to get 3-4 broodies from her about a week before my chicks are delivered so they will be nice and settled! Whoot! Whoot!!
That is exciting! Congratulations! Don't forget to show us pictures.

I make bone broth though we call it soup. I'm African and it has so many uses, growing up we had bone soup so many ways and though did not really know the nutritional values it was the norm. After deliveries women were always given bone broth (soup) as part of the daily diet. We use all kinds of bones, my Dad makes using goat bones and the goat feet with hoofs removed and roasted first.
Roasting goat hooves?? That sounds intriguing.

Lisa :)

He removed the Hooves and discard so only the soft inside part was left on

:) he would put them on the fire to remove the hair and hooves without removing all the skin. It gave the soup/broth a different flavor, but then again he also makes goat head soup and it's yummy

(makes me want some now),He also boils the bark and roots of some trees that I don't know the names and uses that as herbal medicine among other things. I've got to say we drank lots of his home remedies and didn't get sick as children.

You need more sleep Leslie, you THINK you are 48? I will admit that I always knew how old I was without thinking about it until I was in my mid to late 20's. Then I guess it became unimportant and have since had to calculate it. As long as I can remember what year I was born and what year it is currently AND subtract, I will know how old I am. After that, I guess it is time for 'the home'

Higher math: I had finished 5th grade when Leslie was born.

Yep. If you always tell the truth, you never have to remember what you said.

Yes, it's a math thing ... and I was born in an easy year for doing age math ('65). I've been saying "I'm almost 50" for so long I have confused myself. I have to think about my sister, who is a year older, and then subtract 1. And still that's sometimes too much math. So ... even with truth things can get confusing!

We're doomed. Doomed, I say. DOOMED!

(stil not worth telling fibs ...)

This makes me want to learn from someone how to do these things. Cities cause us to lose all this know! It's sad.

I love when I make broth and there is so much of the good stuff in them it gels. SOOOO nutritious. And I love using as much of the animal as I can. I haven't quite brought myself to the point of saving bird heads ... and I've never saved the feathers, either. But I'm inspired to try saving the feathers, at least.

I want to get a nice, big, stainless steel stock pot ... that's a leeeeeeetle smaller than the turkey scalding pot. That way I can add the vinegar to the bone broth and not worry about the metal. Now if I want to do a vinegar bone broth I have to use my crock pots, and they aren't very large. Vinegar helps get all the good stuff out of the bones.

Hey anyone here make Bone broth before?

The reason I am going to give it a try is this:

I started with this website because I wanted to investigate Water Kiefer.  Because of my health issues.... Obesity, arthritis, digestive issues... but basically I am always learning how to cook.... and I want to cook good stuff both for health and taste.

hey Deb!

I made water Keir a whole bunch last year. It was yummy and easy. Then things got hectic with moving and I killed my culture through neglect.

It was so easy. I found that white sugar with molasses worked best, but the person I got it from said that raw cane sugar worked best for her.

Oooh Leslie you are making me crave some of the soup right now.. when it gels its so good. I have never used bird heads and what would you do with the feathers, make some kind of art? I did learn to use chicken feet from my SIL last December. I'll have to try adding vinegar to my next bone soup I've never done that, will be getting a slaughtered goat in about two weeks. It's exp I wish I could raise my own.

I make mine in the slow cooker. Dump it in with water to cover the bones and overnight it on slow. I have to make mine in the storeroom because it has a smell that gets on everybody's nerves. ! T ACV added. Pour it off in the morning or pm if you prefer and add water and do it again. They use the bones over again. Not quite as thick but still good for beans and soups.
