The Front Porch Swing

You know.... he/she looks like an Aurucana....

We have Easter Eggers in the flock ... most of them have beards. I don't think Pinguin has a beard. Yet. S/he could sprout one. Or sprout a tail.

A couple of the Freedom Mutts are starting to look more like some of the breeds we have. A couple look like Silver Laced Wyandottes. A couple look like Speckled Sussex.

The tailess option... (buying a car here LOL) is because they are born without a parsons Nose.   or no tail bone.  Any chicken can pop up with that missing part.

I'm not sure s/he is rumpless, but s/he for sure doesn't have the tail feathers that some of the others have. Yet. They are feathering really fast right now, so change every few days. If I could catch him/her at night, I could check for a rump.

I wish they were easier to photograph. They're so speedy!

I did that for my Guineas because I was not allowing them to free range. They Wuvved their Catfish kibble.... What I would do is mix it in a big trash can four to one.... four Poultry one catfish. I dont know what final percentage of protien that is I actually figured it out on paper... but my brain isnt working these days.
:
My handyman finished the wooden door on my coop and did an outstanding job. Also installed my grinder. Hand crank. A quick $200 bucks.. He did use his old wood and it looks really rustic with brass fittings.
I went to grocery store, picked up my Meds at Fred's and brought a layer feed, a gamebird and a bag of catfish feed. Deb, I'm going to do it like you 4 to 1 and see which I like best. Cost really close. Gamebird @ $18 and catfish @ $17.

Bee, how much more feed do your CX eat over the other chicks. Just calculating.

Yay!

Wow!!! I am gonna have to catch up here!! This thread goes so fast!

But here is what I did this morning.

Homemade strawberry jam made from fresh strawberries right from our patch! And the beauty of this recipe is I didn't have to use
pectin or processed white sugar!!!

It's just strawberries, maple syrup (which we made ourselves this spring), and chia seeds!
The chia seeds provide the thickening as they absorb liquid. Chia seeds they say are higher in omega 3 than flax seed, so some good nutrition in the mix. The maple syrup is from the first batch we made which is light and has more of a carmely taste than maple. It is soo good and I can't taste syrup and the chia seeds has little to no flavor. I did add extra coconut sugar as my strawberries are a little tart. But it came out sooo good! I never have been able to make jam. It always comes out runny. Use it for icecream topping!

I'm going to put it in the freezer, as I read it doesn't can well, and now I don't remember the reason why.

Yummers! Strawberry jam is my favorite. I love it has no white sugar too.

I have one without tail feathers too. A GLW. The chick was a help-out hatch on March 24th fluffing and feathering in very pretty otherwise but looks rumpless.

Here is a pic of one of the maran eggs I'm going to put under the broody. It has a tiny chip of shell missing. The membrane is not ruptured, so should I use it to hatch?

With a piece of the shell actually missing, i'd not bother. Do you have enough eggs to incubate without using this one? I sealed a cracked egg: the crack wasn't highly visible, (a spider web crack about the size of a nickel) with candle wax. The chick developed until about day 8 then quit. The chick also adhered to the crack. If you want to try it, try a piece of scotch tape.

Second that!

Ditto the fried bologna sandwich. If i have toasted cheese sandwiches with my tomato soup, the crust always falls off my sandwich and into my cup of soup.
