The Front Porch Swing

I made Teryaki marinated ribeyes and Baked potatores and salad yesterday.

learned something new.... I have one of those plastic storage containers big enough for a whole Lazagna I threw six small Russet potatoes in there and popped them in the microwave for 15 minutes. while I cooked the steaks and made barbeque sauce out of the marinade.... I hate to throw out marinade so I plop it in a sauce pan with some catsup and simmer it till its cooked.... Then let it reduce a little to thicken it.

The potatoes came out perfectly.... sooo well cooked I am going to do the potatoes for Potatoe salad that way... and next time I do mashed potatoes I am going to do them that way too.

Grandma was in bed, Dean and I were doing internet stuff and watching Food network or something in the background started. There are hills all around and a HUGE Ban on fireworks so we got to hear them but not see them. Last time I lived somewhere that allowed fireworks at home was when we lived in Las Vegas before 1967.

Well all, in about an hour I can offer up some out of the oven sheaperds pie. I will warn you, we do are sheaperds pie a bit different! We do organic grass fed beef, cook it and save the juice. Put the beef down, then carrots, broccoli, cabbage and corn, then a layer of cheese. On top we do mashed potatoes, but we do red potatoes and one yam. Mash it all up with the juice from the beef and some from the corn, put in on top, then throw in oven until the edges brown. Super yummy! No gravy
I've got my plate out!

Sounds delightful. (Shepherds pie) We got to have a quiet 4th celebration. Kids went camping... in a rain storm. So, hubby and i stayed home alone and made the best of it.

I've never quite understood what all the excitement is around the noise and crowds on the 4th. The lights are pretty for sure, but I'll put them up against the beauty of a summer thunderstorm, or the delicate way perfect rose petals unfurl against each other, and tickle your nose with their scent... or the feel and smell of a wiggly little puppy. Or the downy fuzz on a new born baby's head. Or the soft cheep of contented chicks.
or a sunset...or the stars on a cloudless night!

We had a good day yesterday and today too. Next door neighbors are wealthy (at least family is) and they threw a bash that started at noon. About 25 20 somethings swimming, laughing , loud music. and BBQ. They were having a blast and at 9pm started a full hour or more of fireworks. Aimee gets up at 5am and was not happy but what can you do? They weren't causing trouble, just NOISE. Matt must have known that it would be in issue because he gave SIL a huge platter of grilled deer steak and 4 more frozen pkgs.

Matt is the one that married into the money because he went from great guy to an ***** in no time. We had to drug the dog. 120 lbs of shivering mass at the sound of fireworks.

The rest of the family was a little envious of the party. Not me. That would be he// for me.

Everybody is eating and drinking great and happy happy in their little coop. All 13 of them. I have another 18 SBEL's hatching in another 2 wks and 15 white ply. rocks a week after. Where to put them? I really am going to have to sell the hatchery pullets at POL

I had a lovely rottweiler mix that was TERRIFIED of storms (thunder). She dug her way straight through dry wall, steel plated front door, interior doors, a wire cage. Clawed and chewed at the windows. She broke teeth on that wire cage. She destroyed it in two days (first day she bent it a little, we bent it back, second day she snapped the welds). Doggy drugs helped a little, but we couldn't medicate her every time we went to work, for those unexpected summer storms.

We started dropping her off at MIL's if we expected any sort of storm. She would hide under your desk or in your arms and just kept searching around the house for a place to hide.

Poor thing.

I've got 6 eggs hatching next friday... or sooner, it's been hot afterall. Not a clue what I'm gonna do with them.

We lazed about the house some, yesterday. Finished cutting the lawn, let the kids play in the pool. I made a small fire for my stepson so he could roast some marshmellows. Then I grilled some burgers and corn, had some drinks... then we went and saw Thunder on the mountain, which is a local fireworks show put on by the city of Birmingham. We got there a bit late so couldnt get really good spots, but the boys liked it. I had to sit in the car with Ms Milly who wanted to feed heh. Traffic getting back was a nightmare. We live near a place called the American Village, which is HUGE on holidays. So traffic was all backed up there too.

We've had a not so great holiday. the children have been sick. thankfully my husband has had a half week off of work, so we got a coop done (yay!) But nothing else! Oh well. :-] our town has pretty good fireworks, so we went out to watch them, and let our chicks out for the first time for an hour last evening, so that was two enjoyable things on the fourth! :) better than the rain last year That messed up the fireworks..... :)

I don't even know how to post this. My husband, Doug, committed suicide this morning. I am still in shock. We do not even know why. Please Pray for him and for me. He was my life. I have no way of knowing how I will go on. If someone can contact bee, please PM me for my phone no. Her son was planning on apprenticing with him to be a gunsmith.

rrrmamma, I am so very sorry, I wish I had words to make you feel better, or help you understand why it happened. I pray for your family and your husband. Jen
