The Front Porch Swing

Grain... and wood. Those are the smells that take me back. I used to climb up on the grain barrel (the grains mixed with molasses) and sneak little hand fulls to chew on. One day, the lid on the barrel shifted and tipped up clobbering me in the chops. I got a fat lip, and bruised my front teeth. To this day, there are 2 spots on my front teeth where I suppose extra calcium was laid down as a result of that mis-hap. Too bad the rest of my teeth aren't as white! Then later on, I was never happier than when my Dad took me out on the road with him. He was a building contractor, so we'd visit the job sites, then my day was made in heaven if we got to stop at the old Agway store, and he gave me a quarter to go out back in the grain room and choose some scoops of grain to take home to my chickens.

Ooh I loved nibbling on Alfalfa and molassis.... mad my teeth green though.... LOL. I mourned the fact that my mare would never have this treat....

The pink eggs are brown with bloom. After they've been in the fridge they'll be brown. All my birds lay shades of brown, from very light almost cream to a medium brown. I've got two 16 week old marans that should add a bit of darker brown and I've got an easter egger around the same age.

I've got two production reds and two partridge rocks that lay the slightly darker eggs. My white rock, jersey giant and Australorps lay the lighter ones. The barred rocks seem to lay a fairly dark brown egg, they just started laying... that leaves these three black gals. I don't know what they are. According to the man I got them from the breeder had Australorps and jersey giants. They have yellow feet.. one of the girls had a black comb, but now it's only partially black. I wondered about some Sumatra mixed in, seems random... but maybe?

The egg closest to the camera is a pullet egg... almost plum colored, like a langshan egg. I wonder if the breeder had some project birds or something. Adding in some weird black breeds to change their egg color?

Well I think most pink eggs are very light brown. But it sounds like you have a nice rainbow basket of eggs.
I bought 6 more easter eggers this year so that I could add some more colors but 4 of the 6 turned out to be cockerels.

My welsummer lays a nice dark egg but the rest are brown and white and one green egg layer. I can't wait till the other two ee's start laying hopefully I will get some pretty color from their eggs!

I've tried and tried to get something other than brown in there

Same luck with EE's/Ameraucanas. I *think* I have one pullet this time around.. be my luck she lays brown. Guess I can't be too picky, we do get different shades of brown.
