The Front Porch Swing

Got a couple gallons of paint this afternoon!

I decided to go with a white/gray paint (I mean, how can you go wrong with a paint called "Alpaca"?). My sister got me a 25% discount, too! This is what I've painted so far:

800

I figured I could paint more tomorrow morning when I can open up the garage. The last thing I want is to suffocate the cats (they are spending the night in the garage restroom).

For the baseboards, what color should I go with? They are white right now but I'm not sure if maybe I should go with a darker color so the room isn't so white. I know I'll be putting in pine floating shelves to add some color, but I'm just not sure if white baseboards help or hurt the room.

In birdie news, my red golden pheasants are ready for me to pick up! We might end up taking a quick trip to Conroe, TX to get them this weekend (well, as quick as a 14 hour round trip can go).

I like the colour. The easiest option is to paint the baseboard the same colour as the wall!!
I love red golden pheasants. We have wild ring necks. LOTS of them. Would love to raise the red goldens. Keep us informed on how they come along! I would like to know how tameable the are. I think that they would have to be kept enclosed at all times since especially here in MN Pheasants have naturalized. People hunt them all the time and I even managed to run one over once going out to see our Arabian stallion at the training barn. Was in "Pearl" my 1969 VW Beetle, and I was going 60 mph. Suddenly saw a green head pop up in front of my hood... Next thing there was a 12 x 12 cloud of feathers in my rear view. Poor Rooster didn't know what hit him. My grandfather used to hit them on purpose (and a tad slower) then toss them in the trunk so he could have it for supper. Pheasant was his favorite!
On the home front, we have so many pheasants here that I hear one crowing at least every few minutes. They are loud, noisy birds and constantly traipsing around the backyard. I know there is no permit needed here for them since they are not migratory fowl. Amazing, though everyone seems to have wild turkeys, we do not EVER see or hear any. I think the local area is filled to the limit with pheasants and they are not sharing their cushy woods/marsh/brook area. It is pheasant paradise behind us and to our west.

The importance of the color of the baseboard is directly proportional to the amount of it that will be seen once you put furniture in the room

If you aren't going to see it, get whatever trim paint is the cheapest and if that happens to be white, OK. I think the trim around windows and doors would be more important. I'm not a huge fan of "white on white on white", too stark, so it would depend on how NOT white the Alpaca is.

I believe that Grant is buried in Grant's Tomb and a quick 14 hour trip takes 14 hours, same as a long 14 hour trip. Some things are pretty clear cut

I was thinking I could just use the alpaca for the baseboards but just add some gray paint to make it slightly darker. I buy miss-tints all the time for my projects ($30 gallons of paint for $5!) and I know I have a couple cans of dark gray paint. That way I have some definition.

Ooh, I imagine that would be so cool to have all those pheasants around you! We have chachalacas and they are so loud but so pretty! And parrots. Those lovely Mexican green parrots are always around. I'm trying to get my hands on a mulberry tree so I can attract parrots. I just love them! :D

An entire wall's worth of baseboards won't be visible but that doesn't change that I WILL know what's back there, haha! I'm going to try and make the window a focal point since this far, it has been the place where things can lean (and where the cats can glare at the outdoors from ;) ). The blinds are gonna have to go and I'm going to try my hardest to put up a curved curtain rod. I want to try and curve PVC pipe to make a rod that follows the shape of the window. I think that'd be interesting. Now to see if I can even do it, haha!

Okay, I think I know about the trim paint. I'm gonna find my gray paint and see if it's glossy. If it is, I can mix it with my eggshell finished paint and get a semigloss paint, perfect for trim. I think that will look nice.

I don't know, Bruce, I think a 14 hour trip can feel a lot shorter when you're around the right people. ;)

Or hell if you aren't!

I think paint for drywall is not the same stuff as trim paint and I think it is more than "gloss or not". Might want to check on that though, you note I said THINK!

You can mix paints of different finishes - ie. a gloss and a flat. But hope you never have to do any touch-up. I believe that the builder for our last house mixed the gloss paint for the ceiling with the wall paint and just painted everything the same. I had the name of the paint color and the manufacturer, but could never get the sheen right. The colors would match, but you could always see where the touchup was because of the light reflected differently at that spot.

Okay, did my research. They are the same but the finish is different. Semi-gloss is for trim, eggshell is for hallways, flat is for bedrooms, etc. I ignored that because the paint brand only came in eggshell and semi-gloss and that was the one I had the discount for.

I can probably get a pint if colored trim paint for about $5. Not a whole lot but it'll come in the right shade and finish, so I'll be able to get more if necessary. The good thing is I could always buy two pints of the same paint (or make it) and still use it for touch ups down the road. The light coming into the room will be minimal because of the trees blocking morning light and afternoon sunlight being on the other side of the house, so we shouldn't have too much color variation after a couple years.

I used to have my landlady paint my apt walls with semi gloss so I could wash them. She loved it and and said my walls always looked so nice compared to the other apts. (painted.with flat finish) Rules were made to be broken !

The eggshell isn't quite flat but it's not too shiny, so I'm hoping it'll be alright. I am taking it a bit slower today because of how outrageously hot it is outside (and therefore, in the garage).

The cats don't seem to mind at all. They are watching me from their posts as I struggle to reach the corners. :(
