The Front Porch Swing

You need one of those cabs with the glass partition between the front and back seats!

The kids would probably break the glass trying to put their feet up on my seat. :(

Apparently I'm supposed to go on a trip with these punks again because Nathan wants to go see the new Terminator movie on IMAX. I don't want to go anywhere with these people! I'm supposed to act like a sister to this guy but neither of my brothers have every acted like this A$$H0LE!!!!

And if he has a problem with it, he can shove it.

Making butter is super easy

We used to do it. You whip cream until it curdles and you'll have butter and 'buttermilk'. But you've not cultured your milk, so it's not really buttermilk, just whey. You can make ricotta out of the whey.

We made butter in our kindergarten class. The teacher passed around the jar and each of us had to shake it a certain amount of times -our arms did get tired. Classes were large in those days, I think we had about 38-40 kids. All I remember is when it was done we got to spread in on crackers and it was the best butter I ever tasted.
You can remember kindergarten class? Boy, I sure don't! Heck, I'm not even sure glass jars were invented yet when I was in kindergarten!

I'm home! I put the new chickens I got into their quarantine pens and managed to sell that pesky Chinese gander I'd been trying to get rid of.

I got a small flock of Wheaten Ameraucanas (1 roo, 4 hens), an Iowa Blue rooster, a Black Silkied Ameraucana rooster and 7 red golden pheasant chicks. No matter how horrendous the traveling was, whenever I bring new birds home, I feel a special tingle in my heart. It really reminds me of how fortunate I am.

Can't wait to get some eggs, though, haha!

Following an attack on me yesterday, we had no choice for the safety of Evan, Katie, and Kendra. We had to cull Scout. It's stoopid chicken, why has it been so hard? I pride myself on being a good steward of the animals I am entrusted with, and this is a bitter pill to swallow. But I know that I learned so much from him, and he will live on in the chicks Agatha is due to hatch on Tuesday.

:( I'm sorry, it's frustrating to be in a situation like that and not be able to retreat to your own space for a bit!

Anyone here make their own butter? I scored some raw milk yesterday an was going to try my hand at it!
Not sure you will get butter from milk. My family makes butter out of cream. (Heavy) if you can skim off enough cream, you can make butter by over whipping it with a beater. My mother and aunt used a large hand churn, when they were young. There will be fluid left over as well as butter. Lightly salt it. It may be lighter in colour than you're used to seeing. The yellowest butter is from all grass fed cows. Raw milk does make excellent cheese. There are recipes on line for cottage cheese, farmers cheese, mozzarella, and ricotta. All are fairly easy cheeses to make. Good luck with your venture, but don't whip your raw milk and expect butter because it WON'T work!
