The Gang's All Here!

Ahhh! How cute!

Thanks all for admiring our new babies. We just love them. While we were out enjoying the sunshine after dinner, I found a few small worms and one little cricket which the chicks loved. They played the "keep away" game but quickly swallowed the tasty snacks. Oddly, it was the Black Australorps who jumped at the chance to eat the snacks while the others gave chase. They must be real go-getters!

Does anyone have a suggestion on what my mystery chick is? (see first set of photos)

This chick has chosen my son, Derek. He's named her Roseanna. We marked two of her toes with a black marker to make it easier to find her. She runs out of the crowd when she sees a hand! She's very bold and sweet and will hold still to be held.

Your extra looks like a light brahma. Nope I went back and checked...no fuzz on legs

But I will leave the pics for you anyway.

Does she have feathered legs? If she does have fuzz on her legs, she is a light brahma.

You can see mine in the crowd here at one day old:

See the fuzz on her leg:

The australorps are real go getters. I found a few worms and a grub in the garden the other day. I dropped one into the brooder...the NHR and a BA grabbed it and each got half...that same BA scarfed up the next two I dropped in there.

Oh they are cute! We've got 12 newbies here from two different hatcheries, 3 days apart in age. The one on hubbie's head looks like my BAs. I've got two of those but one is very weak. All the others are very active.

Thanks ladies!

Cetawin, no fuzzy legs on the freebie chick. I think it's a Silver-Spangled Hamburg and we've named him "Silver". He's got a lot of personality and even at the ripe age of 2 days he acts like he's trying to crow! He sits back on his hocks and opens his mouth but instead of a crow coming out, all he says is "Peep! Peep!"

I gotta admire the kid for his spunk. He's the smallest of the group but never backs down in a chest-thumping competition. He's proof positive that you're as big as you think you are!

Henrietta, thanks to some advice from Miss Prissy, I think we've finally figured out which black chicks are BA's and which are BR's. The Australorps have black or very dark shanks while the Rocks have much paler shanks. We love them all, and are really enjoying having them.

We've split the flock into two groups: yellows and blacks. Today the black chicks got to venture out into the fresh green grass and tomorrow the yellow chicks will get to go. What fun!

Isn't it fun? Well, watching the healthy ones is. I'm worried about my one weak one. And we're just getting grass here. It's still too cool for little ones outside. We're getting there though!

I tell ya, it's better than TV! We have to force ourselves away and the boys haven't watched any TV in two days. What a great way to get the whole family involved in something. I recommend chicks to anyone. I was thinking today that a flock of chickens would be wonderful for residents in retirement communities or people who have depression. They instantly cheer you up and give you something fun to focus on. I'm hooked!
