I see posts about bad dogs here every day. So many murderous, thieving canines out there!

But when I posted about what a good "flock guard" my Golden Retriever is becoming, this response from BarnGem made me realize how many GOOD DOGs there are out there:

We had a wonderful black lab growing up that took care of all the babies on the farm. In fact we caught her stealing baby kittens from the neighbor she would bring them home and cuddle up with them. She once brought home a baby wood chuck, that was sad cause we had no way of knowing where its momma was to take it back. We tried to bottle feed it but it did not surivive. Poor thing. She just loved baby anything that was her job as far as she was concerned.

How sweet is that?

If you have a good dog story, post it here.

All of my dogs (4) respect the fact that they are not allowed to "play" with the chickens. I have a 4 yr old Catahoula that hinks he's the "mommy" to the itty bitty babies. He tries to lick them and sends them flying! But he's very gentle and lets them cuddle up with him if they want to.

Just yesterday my Boston Terrier went nuts barking (she's not a barker) so I grabbed my gun and went outside. Everyone was frozen and looking up! There was a hawk that had swooped (and missed!) and she was going to go after it! I couldn't believe that even when she was inside, she was still trying to protect "her" chickens!

Also, a few weeks back when someone tried to steal my chickens, a bunch of them took to the woods to hide. I heard a noise, and turned around and she was herding them back to the house. She was passing back and forth behind them, walking, so she wouldn't scare them. She brought about 8 back at once after going and finding them! I was really impressed!

Even though my wiener did eat my 3 little chicks last week(it was totally my fault)he is a good dog. All 3 of the dogs are great. Our 1 year old pit/cat mix has done the same thing with kittens. HE carried off two kittens dug a hole placed them in it and laid over it. Now I can't say if he was warming them or saving them for a treat. Ha ha.
But let someone come in our yard that he doesn't know and he is on them like white on rice. He doesn't growl or bite he just has a bark that will shake you up. As far as the wiener and the mini jack go they are well easily won over by food. None of them mess with the big hens or cat.

My dogs do not pay much attention to the chickens. When they do its just a quick sniff and they move on. They know my chickies are part of the pack.

My hen was not happy with both dogs sniffing her so she ran. The dogs did not chase her. To my surprise.

My Old English Sheepdog, with the dark lamb, and my Border Collie, with the light lamb, are both very, very patient with any kind of animal and act as nurses for them. Both Sammy and Taxi are boys, but if they were girls, they'd be the type to let another species nurse with their babies.

My dog, Dharma - a border Collie/lab mix, loves babies. I remember she was a bit of trouble when she was 1 because she wanted to carry the chicks around. I remember one day i thought I had lost both my buff orpingtons. I ran all over our yard (2 acres!) searching for them! Then my dad arrived home from work. Naturally Dharma ran up to greet him. She gentley placed a slobbery, scared chick in his hand. He called me over and gave me the chick. I was so grateful to have found her that i didn't remember to scold Dharma. Instead I asked her where the other one was and she happily went and got it out of the garden.

Dharma also loves kitties. She used to snuggle with this cat we had bottlefed named Itchy. They would curl up together out in the yard, in the living room, - they were pretty much inseparable. I'll try and find a pic.
